KHOI Celebrates Its First Year On the Air

September 2, 2013 - 12:15pm -- paulhertz

KHOI Community Radio invites the public to celebrate its first year of radio broadcasting on Saturday, September 7th. Celebrations will occur in two consecutive events in downtown Ames, including a party at the station's headquarters with cake and performers, followed by a free concert at Cafe Diem. KHOI actually dates its birth to August 17, when it officially commenced regular broadcasting. Anniversary celebrations were postponed until September 7th to accommodate vacation times.

The September 7th celebrations will begin at 5:00 PM at KHOI's headquarters at 410 Douglas Avenue (the Ames Pantorium building).  Refreshments will be served, including a birthday cake provided by KHOI and HyVee. Myra Henderson, from Boone, will give a live musical performance, along with surprise guests.

Celebrations will continue at Cafe Diem at 229 Main Street in Ames from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM with a live performance by Tom and Doug, along with musicians Joe Bezek, Will Stone, Knitmaster SSK, Dot-Com Girl, and others. Tom and Doug are the stars of “The Tom and Doug Show” a music and comedy show that airs weekly on KHOI at 11:30 on Saturday mornings and also syndicates nationally.  They describe themselves as the “the second best jazz-rock-ragtime-blues-comedy-rap-polka bands among New Jersey/Iowa duos.” Thomas Florek is from Princeton, New Jersey and Doug Gentile is an Ames resident and professor of psychology at Iowa State University.

Gentile said, “There's always a lot of uproar when Tom and I actually get to see each other in the same place and we want to share the brouhaha. Everyone, come and party with us at Cafe Diem on the 7th! It's free. But we ask that you still bring your checkbook and be a part of KHOI's financial success in their second broadcast year.”

“We certainly want to spread the fun and excitement about what has been accomplished so far. And  we want to thank everyone who has made this first year possible. KHOI belongs to the Central Iowa community.” said KHOI station manager Ursula Ruedenberg.
