Story County is transitioning to a new system for mass emergency notifications under the statewide Homeland Security. Melissa Spencer, deputy coordinator for Story County Emergency Management explains the change, which is scheduled to go into effect on March 1st. Iowa House Representative Chip Baltimore introduced State House Bill 9, that challenges Ames zoning ordinances restricting the use of dwellings in residential low-density and urban-core-medium-residential zones to no more than 3 unrelated people residing in a house. Baltimore explains his bill. Ames Mayor Ann Campbell, who has spoken against the bill, responds and gives reasons for supporting the current zoning and Home Rule, the power of a constituent part of a state to exercise such of the state's powers of governance within its own administrative area that have been decentralized to it by the central government.
