You may have a sense that it’s good for kids to play outdoors—and a sense that it doesn’t happen as often as it used to. But why? To answer these questions, we first talk to Pamela Riney-Kehrberg, of ISU’s History Department, who is researching how and why the nature of childhood has changed from the post-Civil War period to the present. Then, we speak with ISU naturalist Rebecca Christoffel to learn some tips about how to engage kids with Nature. Finally, we visit Ames' Prairie Flower Children’s Center, a Waldorf preschool where nurturing children’s connection with Nature is central to what they do. Along the way, we hear how playing in natural settings is ideal for a child's early development.
