Local Talk for Friday, November 4, 2022 featured the Dennis Hart news summary from the Ames Tribune.

Andrew Allen, President and CEO of YSS in Ames discussed their many preventative programs for Story county youth and families.  Andrew told about Reggies’ Sleepout for homeless individuals and made an appeal for contributions to YSS.org/holiday giving. Also there are 73 open positions for their very extensive network of forty programs to address the needs of our youth and their families.  

Susan Gwiasda, Public Information Officer for the City of Ames provided announcements for No Charge, Yard Free cleanup day on November 12.  Also, a new program of free saw log lumber at the wood-pile facility at base of cemetery hill on 13th St. on November 12. 

Amber Wengert Iowa State University Extension and Outreach for Story County and Marketing Coordinator, announced upcoming Interact Club for the entire family on Nov. 9 - 16 - 30 and Dec. 7.

InterAct Program for youth and adults for healthy relationships

  1. Pesticide Continuing Instruction course
  2. 4-H and two new Clubs: Cardinal and Gold Stars and Cultivating Hope
  3. Seed saving Webinar on November 9 at 7PM by Bill Johnson IA. DNR Prairie Sed Harvest Biologist
  4. And an open house will be held Nov. 15 from 4 -5PM cultivating Hope addressing autism

Dr. Molly Lee, Story County Board of Health, joins us for our monthly visit about the latest updates and vaccination information on COVID-19, and Influenza.  We also review current information on Respiratory Syncytial Virus in children. Dr. Lee also shares information about YSS (Youth Shelter Services) and provides information on basic health educational needs as well as physical and mental health services.

We listen in to a conversation with Naturally Speaking author, Steve Lekwa.

Susan Gwiasda, Public Information Officer for the City of Ames;  informs our listeners about city council and the town budget meeting(s). She also reminds listeners that the resource recovery center has a recycling drop off bin for halloween pumpkins and Jack-o-Lanterns.

Gabrielle Edwards, Ames new City Forester, shares a bit about her background, reviews the areas within the city she is responsible for and takes a bit of time to discuss tree species to consider for future plantings.

Finally, we visit withVicki and Joe Price, well known Iowa blues musicians.  They will be performing at Alluvial this coming Friday starting at 7:00 P.M.

Local Talk for Friday, October 28, 2022 featured the Dennis Hart news summary from the Ames Tribune.

Iowa Turkey vulture status and life history was presented.

Susan Gwiasda, Public Information Officer for the City of Ames invited Fleet and Facilities Manager Corey Mellies to Local Talk.  Corey provided an update on the Downtown Plaza, including the closure of Clark Avenue, the relocation of the utility payment drop box, and the new (temporary) main entrance into City Hall.  Susan also announced Yard Free drop off for autumn cleanup on Saturday Oct. 29 from 8AM to noon.

Author/photographer Ty Smedes will present on Thursday, November 3rd from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Story County Conservation Center, McFarland Park for a slide presentation which will reveal many incredibly interesting discoveries about the Bald Eagle and how they go about their every-day lives here in Iowa!  This presentation will reveal many highlights of Ty’s book “The Return of Iowa’s Bald Eagles”, which he will be signing and offering for sale.  Doors will open at 10:00 a.m. for coffee/tea and chatting.

Aza Lyons, the Iowa State University’s English department’s Student Steward is sponsoring a hike on November 5th starting at 1:00 PM at the Everett Casey Natural Habitat Reserve located northeast of Ogden, in Boone county, Iowa.

Steve Lekwa, former Director of Story County Conservation visits about the nomination process for the Olav Smedal Conservation Award.   This award is presented annually in recognition to an area individual/individuals that through their efforts to promote conservation and our natural resouces and outdoor recreation.

Susan Gwiasda Public Information Officer for the City of Ames highlights the upcoming city council meeting, and the meeting to discuss the Linc Project, along Lincolnway and Grand Avenue planning project between 9th and 24th street as well as the town  budget meeting.  highlighting the upcoming first “no charge yard waste day” this coming Saturday and  halloween begger’s night on Monday Oct 31st, 5:30-7:30 PM.  Details of these and other events can be found on the city of Ames website.

City of Ames Parks and Recreation Director, Keith Abraham  provides updates including the Parks and Recreation Department’s accessibility audit, some upcoming public meetings, and how to share your thoughts on making facilities more accessible to all users.  We also mention the Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) grant awarded to Ames for the new park property located in west Ames.

Democrat candidate for Iowa governor, Deidre DeJear, takes time to educate our listeners about her reasons for seeking this office, reviews what she stands for and share those areas she feels are important for all Iowans.

Local Talk for Monday, October 24, 2022 featured the Dennis Hart news summary from newspapers throughout Iowa.

During the HighTrestle HawkWatch earlier this month, Morgan Christensen participated as she has in previous years, just a fine young birder!  And while we were observing, identifying and tabulating hawks, eagles and turkey vultures I learned of an exciting bird study that Morgan has compiled. 

Board of Supervisors incumbent, Lisa Heddens discussed her candidacy and laid out her priorities for her race to maintain her position. She encourages people to contact 211 if there are any mental health issues in Story County families.

Mellisa Spencer with Story County Emergency Management provided listeners encouragement to prepare for upcoming winter season.  Story County collaborates with City of ames and interested parties to address any closures on I35.  Partners will be meeting October 31 to ensure the needs of travelers can be met in respect to any blizzards.  Having winter weather supplies are essential to travel this time of year.  Blankets, shovels, warm coats, jumper cables, flashlight, cell phone chargers all need to be in good working order.
