The ground floor of the building had been decorated by volunteers, and included photographs of the Story County towns that will be served by the station, pictures of needed equipment, as well as a mock radio studio.

The Pantorium building is situated next to the Ames Historical Society, across the street from the Octagon Center, and half a block south of the Ames Public Library.

After describing how much community radio stations have meant to other communities, KHOI board president Ursula Ruedenberg used an oversize pair of scissors to cut a ceremonial ribbon, officially dedicating the new facility and launching the station’s capital campaign.

“KHOI will be a community voice,” Ruedenberg said, “where people can exchange ideas and engage in a real dialogue on issue of importance to them.”

The station’s programs will focus on local music, the arts, news and cultural affairs, most of it provided by local talent, she said.

Now that the station is settled in its new facilities, the task ahead is to raise $100,000 for equipment and other expenses. Supporters have until August 2012 to get the station on the air. KHOI Inc. is a 501C3 not-for-profit organization.
