"Fooling Ourselves" on Nutrient Reduction

KHOI Local Talk reporter Greta Anderson interviews Craig Cox and Soren Rundquist of the Environmental Working Group, which released a troubling report earlier this month documenting how, in the years 2011-2014, more acres in Iowa were taken out of conservation practices than were put in--despite the millions of dollars and promotional efforts of the Nutrient Reduction Strategy, intended to help clean up Iowa's waters. We explore the reasons farmers give for these "on-and-off" conservation practices, and how instituting a basic standard of care--i.e., regulation rather than voluntary, subsidized participation--could begin to clean up the polluted waters of the Midwest.
