County Reporters Paul Wierson and Susan Franzen visited Madrid Historical Museum for a tour of the Ackerlund-Burke Coal Mine, a replica of a coal mine dug out from the crawl space under the large museum building. We talked with local citizens about their knowledge and memories of the coal town and the coal camps surrounding it, as well as the local economy during the coal mining era.

KHOI DonnaLonna Kitchen Show Wins Award

The DonnaLonna Kitchen, a radio show on KHOI 89.1 FM in Ames, won international recognition for programming that promotes world-wide understanding of food, nutrition, and agriculture. It was awarded a place among 41 radio productions from around the world, to be featured by a project sponsored by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in cooperation with the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC). It is be one of two programs chosen to represent the United States.

The DonnaLonna Kitchen’s winning radio production is called “Carrot King and Jello”. It features an interview with Gary Guthrie, a farmer well known in Central Iowa for his tasty carrots. Guthrie’s farm, Growing Harmony Farm, is located south of Nevada, Iowa. The winning show also explores the wide world of jello.

HIRTA and Improvements for Squaw Creek

We start the hour hearing from Erv Klaas about the Squaw Creek Watershed Coalition, a volunteer organization which is providing the water-quality data that has attracted state funding for a new water quality improvement plan. Then Ames city council member Matthew Goodman talks about the problems HIRTA has faced and how the city hopes to improve its operation.
