Julia Slocum of Ames describes a trip she took to Oaxaca, Mexico with a delegation from Witness for Peace. She met with many local community groups focusing on the impact of U.S. policy on agriculture and migration, and received inspiration for her own sustainable farm and CSA, Lacewing Acres.

Sandra Looft describes the Ames Kidical Mass bike rides that are planned for families and kids. Bike riders are "gearing up" for the first ride this Saturday, April 22, on Earth Day. Meet at Ames' Brookside Park at 10:00 AM.

Lojean Peterson previews this year's Ames Main Street Farmers' Market, which continues to grow. The first Farmers Market is May 6, and includes the popular "Food Truck Showdown"!

Local Talk reporter Kay Puttock brings us an interview with Pakistani artist Kaukub Barni Merchant, whose Ames studio will be this month's site for ACAC's Gathering of Artists, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, April 18.

Sustainability, Education, and Puppets

The first guests were Merry Rankin, Director of Sustainability for Iowa State University and Sustainability Coordinator for the City of Ames, and Lynne Carey, the Director of the Ames Public Library. They talked about the role of the Library in sustaining a strong community.

Host Gale Seiler, brought us an interview with Pat Kearney, a teacher from Iowa who has taken to blogging to advocate for public education. His blogs now appear in the Huffington Post.

We ended with a fascinating conversation with Amanda Petefish-Schrag, an Assistant Professor of Theatre at Iowa State University and a puppeteer. She spoke about the craft of making puppets and performing with them.

Ames Children's Choir, Sawyer Speaks

Leanne Harter, Story County Outreach and Special Projects Manager announced spring events from Story County before we launched into a preview of the 14th Midwest Children's Choir Festival to be held at CY Stephens Auditorium April 21, 2017. Shon Stephenson, Executive Director of Ames Children's Choirs, and Dr. Christina Svec, Director and Conductor of Concert Choir of Ames Children's Choirs, discussed the special qualities of children's voices, as well as the Midwestern Regional Culture of choral singing.

Shifting from singing to poetry, KHOI showcased some of its many programs featuring poetry including a recording of Sawyer Speaks Spoken Word Poetry Program coordinated by Sawyer Staff members Riley Drake, Nicole Coronado, and Natalie Stowe whose mission is "to support and empower students on their journey to finding their voice as community based activists and accomplices in active solidarity with one another."

Design for Social Change, Airport Fly-in, Community Radio

This show, the first Local Talk program of KHOI's historic 2017 Spring Fund Drive, features segments of a long interview with station manager Ursula Ruedenberg on the history, purpose, and philosophy of community radio in this country and nationwide.

Also featured: an interview with two members of ISU's Flying Cyclones about the Fly-in Breakfast held last Saturday at the Ames Municipal Airport. Small aircraft from around the state and the country flew in to celebrate the opening of a new airport hangar and new terminal.

Steve Kohtz, a graduate student in ISU's College of Design, talks about the project of a new graduate class called Design for Social Change. Log on to the project's special website to learn how you too can help build community by focusing on nicknames--your own and other people's.

Regular monthly guest Keith Morgan chats with the show's hosts about their own approaches to communication technology for local disasters, and brings us up-to-date on this important aspect of disaster preparedness.
