Dennis Hart gives a summary of Iowa news.
We take a moment to recognize the contribution made by Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, researcher at the National Institute of Health who worked with the pharmaceutical company Moderna and discovered the necessary formula for the Moderna COVID19 vaccine.
We also recognize Dolly Parton's donation of a million dollars for this research and hear her receiving her vaccine shot on Twitter, including her newest rendition of "Joline," now called "Vaccine."
Ames native Marilyn Gibbs-Alger, former owner of the Cranford Apartment Building on the corner of Lincoln Way and Stanton Avenue in Ames, tells the history of this distinguished building. It was built by a business developed by Female ISU professors and researchers in 1922 and whose construction was supervised by the female architect, and graduate of ISU, Alda Wilson.
Liz Zuercher, Executive Director of the Story County Community Foundation introduces Childserve, one of the recipients of the SCCF community grants, last November, supporting human services in Story County. Childserve's Director of Development, Sarah Mowery, describes their services offered, and the Respite Program in Ames that was funded by the SCCF, giving care-givers for children with disabilities some opportunities for time off and rest. "Anna Banana" Magnusson, who directs Able Up Iowa describes her first-hand experiences with parents of children with special health needs.

Today's Local Talk featured Dennis Hart news and Merry Rankin Sustainability Coordinator with City of Ames and Iowa State University. Merry discussed sustainability concerning the Smart Business Challenge. Merry invited Robin Boskim to provide background from the Iowa Economic Development stand point. Also Edgar Guillen, ISU student intern, provided his work in facilitating the Smart Business Challenge with KHOI Community Radio. It was concluded that any efforts to diminish our carbon footprint as it were, is worth every penny in a Smart Business Challenge. Anna Banana provided a delightful Carol Pluckrose selection of poetry.

Following Leanne Harter's Story County Report, we heard from Wayne Friedrichs, from the American Soybean Association telling us how he discovered farming practices that not only enhances his ability to farm in difficult weather conditions, greatly improved his bottom line, and dramatically improved soil health. Poet Jennifer Knox re-introduced us to her crowdsourced "Bird of Mouth," and read from her new book, Crushing It. Finally, we covered the first two days of the trial of Andrea Sahouri, the Des Moines Register Reporter who was arrested for covering a Black Lives Matter protest in Des Moines on June 20, 2020.

Susan Qwiasda, City of Ames Public Relations Officer Reviews upcoming meeting and provided information on how to keep up-to-date on projects within the city.
Dean Sayre, Ames Public Works Provided project updates relating to our roadways and residential street projects. Discussed the planning and preparation that occurs before a project begins including residential interaction traffic control, worker safety, re-route planning.

Sarah Wiley, owner of Open Atlas Travel, a tourism business she launched despite the pandemic, talks about tourism during and post COVID. She addresses our stir-crazy desires to "seize the day" with our travel dreams and explains "deep travel," her method of preparing tourists for intimate experiences of foreign cultures they visit.
March includes Weather Awareness Week, March 22-26. Disasters are part of Spring and warm weather in Iowa. Keith Morgan, Story County Emergency Management Coordinator, describes, in detail, how to prepare an emergency kit and what to do in a weather emergency. Do you have an emergency kit ready? A checklist can be found here.
Morgan also describes Iowa Bill HF 680, supported by the Iowa Emergency Management Association to provide a two-day sales tax holiday for preparedness items. Proposed dates are from midnight on the first Friday of August to midnight on the following Saturday.

Dr. Molly Lee, Associate Director of the Center for Food Security & Public Health at the Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine Reviewed updates with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic including numbers of infected individuals and current distribution efforts.Vaccination numbers and vaccine status: announcement that Johnson and Johnson’s product will soon be available. Reviewed how this vaccine differs from the Pfizer and Maderna products (the mRNA /adenovirus vector vaccine delivers a gene that carries the blueprint for the viral spike protein ket component in infection sequence).
Dr. Karen Harmon, Clinical Associate Professor of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Diagnostic Laboratory shared information about the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) testing. Describes her position with the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL). Summarized importance of PCR testing in animal health described the laboratory’s ability to test large numbers of samples. Explained the basic principles of the PCR test and explained its sensitivity and specificity. Reviewed the VDL -University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory partnership and the test adaptation, training, validation and certification of the COVID-19 testing for human use.
Susan Qwiasda, City of Ames Public Relations Officer and Keith Abraham, Director of Ames Parks and Recreation reviewed the planning and construction progress of a number of projects including the Indoor Aquatic Center, the downtown plaza, some additional amenities for parks located in various areas within the city, and the clubhouse for the Homewood golf course.
