Our first guest is Ron Edwards, who once worked at the nation's largest animal shelter and who moved here last year to take over as the new director of Ames Animal Shelter. Aurora Bettaza, a 10 year old in the Ames Community School District, has spent her summer fundraising for ACSD's homeless liaison program, and comes on our show to talk about it. Finally, we place a phone call to Ann Naffier at Iowa Justice for Our Neighbors, who is calling for bilingual (Spanish-English) volunteers to assist in communicating by phone with Central American child refugees who have arrived in Iowa because family members live here. Naffier provides an update and perspective on the situation. Iowa JFON is a Methodist ministry that provides legal services for refugees such as these children. Music by Nellie Kay.

Citizen lobbying, state politics, local sports and Iowa bears (oh, my!) were the topics explored on Wednesday’s Local Talk program. KHOI’s nature reporter Pat Schlarbaum interviewed DNR Wildlife Research Biologist Vince Evilsizer about the resurgence of the bear population in our state. Longtime citizen lobbyist Deborah Fink described ways the Friends Committee for National Legislation tries to persuade office holders to support laws promoting peace, equal justice and a healthy environment. In a brief interview with Tom Beell, Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor Monica Vernon talked about the challenges of running for a statewide political office. And then KHOI’s new sports reporter, Vivica Dillard, summarized the latest athletic contests in Story County, Iowa and the nation.

Homeless Stand Down and Woodworking

We held a discussion with the organizers of “Homeless Stand Down,” an event for all military veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to be held at Brookside Park on July 29. This is a coordinated effort of Story County and ISU veterans associations. Following was an interview with woodworker Clay Gurganus and a musical introduction to the Bluegrass group Monroe Crossing, that will perform at the Story City Theater on Thursday, July 31.

Dr. Jacqueline Comito is our special guest for this edition of Clean Water Radio, focusing on the central role farmers play in cleaning up our state's waters. Jackie co-manages Iowa Learning Farms, an ISU Extension program which conducts farm days for farmers and on-farm research, and she directs Water Rocks!--an education program that brings music and children into the mix. We talk to Tim Smith, a farmer who discovered that the runoff from his farm was not as nutrient-free as he would like, and Roger Wolf of the Iowa Soybean Association, who describes the organization's water monitoring program and expresses its evidence-based philosophy for Iowa's Nutrient Reduction System.

Country musician Leah Turner visits Ames. Probation officer Christy Boyer, of the Center for Creative Justice talks about her work with domestic batterers. Iowa State University's Team PrISUm talk about the solar car they've built, the race (American Solar Challenge) that the car is competing in, and the all-family festival organized around the official race pit stop, here in Ames. The Pit Stop event will be at the D2 Parking Lot, north of the Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday, July 26, 1:00 - 4:00 PM.

Reporter Greta Anderson kicks off a series of Friday Local Talk shows about water issues across Iowa by sharing the hour with Evan Burger of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement. ICCI has initiated a statewide Clean Water campaign in anticipation of important rulings on regulations, which are notoriously weak in this state. We talk with Bill Stowe, the director of the Des Moines Water Works, and David Osterberg of Iowa Policy Project, who has just published a paper entitled, "A Threat Unmet: Why Iowa's Nutrient Reduction Strategy Falls Short." Our guests argue that with more than 50% of Iowa's waterways listed as impaired, and more than 50% of farmers implementing no conservation measures at all, it's time Iowans got serious about complying with the Clean Water Act and reducing the hypoxic zone in the Gulf of Mexico.

A Pipeline Through Iowa?

We start off the show with an update on the NBA draft, then explore the proposed pipeline across Iowa that Energy Transfer Partners hopes will soon be carrying crude from North Dakota to a distribution point in southern Illinois. After talking with an ETP media rep, we bring in ISU faculty member Franek Hasiuk, who has worked as a geologist in the petroleum industry, and long-time Ames resident Ralph Rosenberg, Chair of the Iowa Environmental Council, to provide perspective on what this proposal will mean to central Iowans. We wrap up with a look at Kids Co'Motion, directed by Valerie Williams.

Falcons, Ospreys and Ames Midnight Madness

This program features the great birds of Iowa: raptors. KHOI wildlife reporter Pat Schlarbaum reports on the fledgling Peregine Falcon that got stranded at the base of the Iowa State Capital in Des Moines. The wild young falcon was raised under the dome of the capital but ended up needing assistance from the DNR and Capital maintenance staff.

Schlarbaum also reports on the current project to re-introduce Ospreys to Iowa. The ospreys are taken from the wild in Minnesota with the help of ELite Power Company, whose poles are the nesting site of choice for ospreys.
