In the second half, the discussion turns to public spaces and music, with Stacey Ross, organizer of Roosevelt Summer Sundays, Ron Carson, organizer of Depot Repo, theThursday night musical events at Ames's old train depot, and Michael David Martin, a musical performer and landscape architect who has given the spaces of Ames a lot of thought.

Hosts Gina McAndrews and Susan Franzen take a road trip to "walk in the footsteps of Kate Shelley" in sites on Honey Creek, the Shelley Farm, and Moingona to help imagine the dramatic events of July 8, 1881, when Kate Shelley, a teenage girl, braved a driving storm to crawl across the railroad bridge spanning the flooded Des Moines River to warn the station master at Moingona that a railroad bridge on Honey Creek was washed out.

They are joined by Jennifer Hansen, the "publisher mom" behind Story-Boone Macaroni Kids, a blog compiling all of the kids' and family activities in the area, including a comprehensive guide to local summer camps. Cynthia McClure talks to Ames-based neurologist Dr. David Moore about the complications surrounding the passage of a law by the Iowa Legislature enabling use of cannabis oil for refractory epilepsy patients.

Then, Greta Anderson interviews Ames musician Paul Doffing about the Ames Bicycle Coalition, which he helped found, and the Bike-to-Work Week events it has lined up this week, including the kickoff to Paul's "Freedom from Fuel" tour this Friday, May 16, at DG's Tap House. Paul plays two lovely songs and laughs at our jokes.

VEISHEA Task Force

The ISU Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Thomas Hill, was appointed by ISU President Leath's office to lead a 20-person VEISHEA Task Force to make recommendations for the future of the event. VEIESHA, Iowa State University's long-standing Spring festival highlighting the university, its students, and faculty, was cancelled this past Spring after public vandalism and a critical injury occurred a few days prior to the festival.

Local Talk ends National Poetry Month with a bit of a "slam" featuring 4 local poets: Jim Coppoc, Xavier Cavazos, Jennifer L. Knox and Claire Kruesel. In between poems, Jim Coppoc shares the history of poetry slams nationwide and in the town of Ames, and describes the scene at Ames Poetry Revival, the poetry slam / music jam that happens the first Tuesday of each month at DG's Taphouse. Host Greta Anderson also checks in with the poets on what drives them to keep pulsing out poems.

Beltane

Beltane is the first Fire festival of the year and is held either on April 30 or May 1, which is halfway between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice. The rituals conducted were intended to purify crops, animals, and people which would help to bring fertility in all three ​in the coming year.
