On the Road Again?..Open Atlas Travel, and Weather Awareness Week

Sarah Wiley, owner of Open Atlas Travel, a tourism business she launched despite the pandemic, talks about tourism during and post COVID. She addresses our stir-crazy desires to "seize the day" with our travel dreams and explains "deep travel," her method of preparing tourists for intimate experiences of foreign cultures they visit.  

March includes Weather Awareness Week, March 22-26. Disasters are part of Spring and warm weather in Iowa. Keith Morgan, Story County Emergency Management Coordinator, describes, in detail, how to prepare an emergency kit and what to do in a weather emergency. Do you have an emergency kit ready? A checklist can be found here.

Morgan also describes Iowa Bill HF 680, supported by the Iowa Emergency Management Association to provide a two-day sales tax holiday for preparedness items. Proposed dates are from midnight on the first Friday of August to midnight on the following Saturday.

Local Talk, Friday, March 5 featured a recap of the news by Dennis Hart.  John Howe, Director of Raptor Resource Project gave updates on famous Decorah Eagle Cam.  There was a call in by Bryna Greenlaw Halloran, a teacher in South Korea. Susan Gwiasda invited Kayley Barrios Lane to talk about energy efficiency in Ames.  Music was by Barbara Keith, The Bramble and the Rose.

1619, Iowa History Month

Two Iowa State University professors, Brian Behnken and Amy Rutenberg, gave us historical background for the controversy over House File 222, which is specifically designed to deny funding for Iowa schools using any part of the 1619 Project (published by the New York Times,won a Pulitzer Prize, and is distributed by the Pulitzer Center). Continuing our emphasis on history, we introduced activities for Iowa History Month, which leads into the 175th anniversary of Iowa Statehood in 1846. KHOI hosts Paul Wierson and Gina McAndrews discussed their personal historical perspectives.

Dr. Molly Lee, Associate Director of the Center for Food Security & Public Health at the Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine Reviewed updates with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic including numbers of infected individuals and current distribution efforts.Vaccination numbers and vaccine status: announcement that Johnson and Johnson’s product will soon be available.  Reviewed how this vaccine differs from the Pfizer and Maderna products (the mRNA /adenovirus vector vaccine delivers a gene that carries the blueprint for the viral spike protein ket component in infection sequence).

Dr. Karen Harmon, Clinical Associate Professor of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Diagnostic Laboratory shared information about the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) testing. Describes her position with the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL). Summarized importance of PCR testing in animal health described the laboratory’s ability to test large numbers of samples.  Explained the basic principles of the PCR test and explained its sensitivity and specificity.  Reviewed the VDL -University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory partnership and the test adaptation, training, validation and certification of the COVID-19 testing for human use.

Susan Qwiasda, City of Ames Public Relations Officer and Keith Abraham, Director of Ames Parks and Recreation reviewed the planning and construction progress of a number of projects including the Indoor Aquatic Center, the downtown plaza, some additional amenities for parks located in various areas within the city, and the clubhouse for the Homewood golf course.

Jennifer Brockpahler, Director of  Ames Community Arts Council, describes the 2021 Business of Arts COnference, that her organization and the Octagon co-produce. This third annual conference supporting all artists in building a viable business out of their work, will be held virtually on March 6 from 8 AM to 4;30 PM. To register go here. Keynote speaker will be Jenie Gao, gallery owner and multi-disciplinary artist from Madison WI.

Local Talk for February 26 included a story about renaming the Creek going through Ames to Ioway Creek. Board of Supervisor Chair, Linda Murken related the history of the renaming process to Ioway Creek. Tribal Preservation historian, Lance Foster honored the airwaves with Ioway history, justification for renaming the creek, and an update of current Ioway activities.  The Ioway Nation perseveres.  Susan Gwiasda with City of Ames segment included Justin Clausen talking about major efforts dealing with snow and water related issues in light of the Texas snowstorm and water debacle.  Anna Banana featured a Carole Pluckrose selection from Maya Angelou.

Karen Kedrowski, Director of the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics (a political science professor at Iowa State University. Her research agenda focuses on women and politics and civic engagement.)   U.S. Rep. Katie Porter – an Iowa native who represents California’s 45th Congressional District and has earned a reputation for her tough questioning and use of visual aids during congressional hearings – will give a virtual presentation on Feb. 26 as the Spring 2021 Mary Louise Smith Chair in Women and Politics.

Electric Power, Redistricting, Voting

Our first guest, James McCalley, head of ISU's Electric Power and Energy Systems, introduced us to what we need to know about Iowa's relationship to both generation and distribution of electric power in the long term.  Facing more immediate challenges was Steve Guyer, Climate Policy Specialist for the Iowa Environmental Council, which is holding a Advocacy Day at the Iowa Capitol and described the importance of renewing solar tax credits in House File 221. Redistricting, and the problems this mandatory action is having because of the delay in the census, was the subject of Evan Burger who recently wrote an article in Laura Belin's "Broken Heartland" Blog.  And finally Carolyn Klaus of the Ames League of Women Voters.
