8-Year Goal of Community Radio Station Achieved

Supporters of KHOI Community Radio will celebrate the completion of a new suite of broadcast studios in downtown Ames next week.

The non-profit station has been operating with improvised broadcast facilities at the historic Pantorium Building at 410 Douglas Ave. since it went on the air in August 2012.

Construction of the three-studio complex has been underway for the past four months, with work done almost entirely by volunteers.

“The new studios are the culmination of eight years of planning and will provide a fully-professional setting for the production of our live and recorded programs,” Ursula Ruedenberg, station manager, said. “This has been made possible by the work and financial support of many local individuals and businesses. We are excited about inviting everyone to see the results.”

KHOI programming can be heard at 89.1 on the FM dial. This week, it will also launch its on line presence, streaming live at KHOIFM.org.

KHOI features locally produced news and entertainment programs, as well as nationally syndicated shows from the Pacifica network.

The public is invited to attend the dedication, which will take place at the Pantorium Saturday starting at 6:00 PM.,/p>

Volunteers, donors and other supporters of the station will provide tours of the studios and invite visitors to record station IDs and other messages. Refreshments will be served.

KHOI is a volunteer-run noncommercial community-based radio station that focuses on local voices, local issues, local arts and culture, as well as nationally syndicated programs. The station’s mission is to “Build community through communication.” Community members are invited to participate in all aspects of running the station as well as being guests on the airwaves.
