Today's show brings us children's voices and the voices of local professionals who seek to cultivate children's literacy. Sarvinder Naberhaus, an author from Ames, speaks about her new children's book "Boom! Boom!" (Simon & Schuster) about the sounds the weather makes. Then Jerri Heid, youth services manager at the Ames Public Library, and Diana Schmidt, Raising Readers organizer, talk about Raising Readers' goals of school readiness and reading proficiency. Raising Readers and the APL collaborate on the Harrison Barnes Reading Academy, which pairs mentors and kids at the library every Wednesday afternoon. Children from that program came to our studios earlier this week, and were recorded talking and giggling about books that they had recently read. Among our guests, there was a lively discussion about changing literacy practices of children today and how parents and all adults can support their development.
Note: Sarvinder will be signing copies of "Boom! Boom!" at BAM on "Black Friday" at 1:00 PM. There will also be an event for children at the ISU Bookstore on December 6 at 10:30 AM.
