KHOI listeners had an unexpected treat Thursday afternoon, June 12, when regular programming was interrupted for an impromptu live performance by two traveling folk singers. Avery Hill and Dan Weber were en route to Hampton for a show there when they pulled off the highway to visit Ames. They found their way to the Ames History Center, where they had a short jam session with staff member Alex Fejfar. Then curator Dennis Wendell walked them next door to KHOI, and within minutes they were on the air. One of their songs was an homage to Woody Guthrie. Hill, who is from Portland, Oregon, plays the banjo, and Weber, whose home is Vancouver, Washington, plays the guitar. The two are independent solo performers who joined up for a tour around the country doing gigs for audiences in private homes, and occasionally, on a community radio station.
