Young People: Building a Fort; Breaking Down Stereotypes

Stories about and by young people in Central Iowa were the focus of this show with co-hosts Gale Seiler and Max Eness. Max and Thea Brenner produced a story about a group of 8th graders who built a fort in Munn Woods in Ames and their efforts to keep it there despite orders from Ames Parks & Recreation to take it down. Members of Al Éxito, an organization that supports Latino young people in Iowa, were in the studio. They talked about their summer program in which the young people wrote and recorded their individual stories to counter the single story and negative stereotypes often constructed about Latinos/as. We heard from Dawn Martinez Oropeza and Yesenia Ayala, as well as these Latino/a youth: Ana, Monica, Alex, Abel, and Yajaira. A list of upcoming appearances by Presidential candidates was shared.
