Gary Guthry, farmer who lives near Shipley IA, begins Earth Week with a description of tree "labyrinth" he planted, where one will be able to walk on clover paths among many species of native Iowa trees and ground bushes to read poems provided on signs, contemplate, and be rejuvenated by the tall silent beings. Guthrie reads some poems on the air and speaks a bit about the history of labyrinths and the personal meaning for him to have this natural place of meditation in the agricultural landscape.
Liz Zuercher, Executive Director of the Story County Community Foundation, introduces one of the recipients of the foundation's community grants. Last December, the Foundation gave out grants to 13 Story County organizations to improve and sustain life in the county. They introduce one of these once a month on Local Talk. Today, Chris white from the Skunk RIver Paddlers described how a grant they received jump-started their fundraising effort to pay for the construction of an accessible boat ramp at Ada Hayden Park so that many more people, including Chris, herself, will be able to join the fun of boating on the water at Ada Hayden.
