Weekend celebrations: Juneteenth and beyond

It's not often that Local Talk is the first program on KHOI to announce a new national holiday, but Juneteenth, the day that all slaves in the United States were free, has just been voted by both houses of of congress as the first new national holiday since Martin Luther King Day in 1986.  We started by discussing the various ways the holiday will be celebrated in central Iowa starting with an explanation from Betty Andrews, president of the Iowa Nebraska ACLU. Then we continued with an announcement of other events coming up.
  1. Black Lives Matter celebration on Marigold from noon to 6 p.m.
  2. Fresh Air Concert at Threshold Learning Center in Zearing, Iowa (Gretta Reischauer)
  3. Tom and Doug Benefit Concert at Dog Eared Books in Ames
  4. Boone Community Theatre providing DVDs or Digital Downloads of "The Last of the Dragons"
