Tell Me Your Flower Story

KHOI SPECIAL PROGRAM: TELL ME YOUR FLOWER STORY

What is your flower story?  Listen to your neighbors tell meaningful stories of flowers in their lives. For a small arts grant provided by the City of Ames, local artist and writer Virginia Kovach interviewed eight local residents and asked them three questions: Will you tell me your flower story? Do you believe flowers are essential? If you were a flower, what flower would you be, and why

Virginia also created art in response to each of their answers. You can visit the art in person at Reliable Street July 29-August 13 and August 15-27. A special reception will be held at Reliable Street on August 12 from 7:30pm-9pm

The stories can be heard on line here on KHOI's Web site, along with the images made by Virginia, as she produces them.

I am an Iowa transplant from Northern Minnesota. I am currently employed as a home maintenance technician and handy-woman. I am an artist who considers flower farming and floral design the three dimensional extension of my painting and photography. Caring for the land and wildlife inspires my art and my farming. I believe that when we investigate the role of humans as caretakers of creation, we discover much about our world and our path forward.

Linda
I grew up in rural Maryland, lived in a cabin without running water in Alaska, and now live in Ames, Iowa where I teach at Iowa State...and have learned to love the prairie.

Laurie
I am a grandma who has lived in Iowa and Minnesota, but whose seven grandchildren all live in other countries. I love to see all the different flowers that grow in those countries when we travel to see the grandkids!

I am a soon-to-be third year in the Iowa State University Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and Environment program, and my writing centers on bringing my love of the Midwest to others. More information about me and my writing can be found by following me on Twitter at @jekcarter.
