KHOI DonnaLonna Kitchen Show Wins Award

The DonnaLonna Kitchen, a radio show on KHOI 89.1 FM in Ames, won international recognition for programming that promotes world-wide understanding of food, nutrition, and agriculture. It was awarded a place among 41 radio productions from around the world, to be featured by a project sponsored by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in cooperation with the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC). It is be one of two programs chosen to represent the United States.

The DonnaLonna Kitchen’s winning radio production is called “Carrot King and Jello”. It features an interview with Gary Guthrie, a farmer well known in Central Iowa for his tasty carrots. Guthrie’s farm, Growing Harmony Farm, is located south of Nevada, Iowa. The winning show also explores the wide world of jello.

This international radio contest was sponsored by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in cooperation with the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC) as part of the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2). The conference was held in Rome Italy this past November, but competing radio shows were submitted from throughout the entire world. Entries interpreted the theme of public education and scientific knowledge about food. The 36 winning community radio productions were from a wide variety of countries, including El Salvador, Haiti, Belgium, Japan, Bangladesh, Iraq, Guatemala, France, South Africa. The DonnaLonna Kitchen is a weekly radio program produced and broadcast in central Iowa at KHOI 89.1 FM in Ames. It is produced and hosted by Donna Prizgintas, who is a chef and Lonna Nachtigal, who is an organic farmer. On the show they explore food, farming, recipes and local food/environmental issues. Prizgintas and Nachtigal live in Ames. "This win is recognition of the magic in small things like carrots and jello. The common need for food and sustainability connects us Iowans to people throughout the world" said Nachtigal.

KHOI 89.1 FM, KHOIFM.org, is a full-power noncommercial community radio station that was built and is run by community volunteers. It features local voices from Central Iowa. KHOI is in its third year of broadcasting. This will be the second award received by the station.
