This preview of the 50th anniversary of Story City’s Scandinavian Days included a lot of local history with Mayor Mike Jensen and host Paul Wierson as they talked with Story City's own poet laureates, the Benson Brothers. Barry and Steve Benson will be at the Bertha Bartlett Public Library, 503 Broad Street in Story City on Saturday, June 6 at 2:00 PM, to read from their newest book, "Poems by the Skunk River Valley Boys." They discussed what makes a good poem and how they have succeeded in the very competitive market of poetry publication.

Co-host Susan Franzen played a recording of last year's kumla eating contest and a couple of songs from "The Little Shop of Horrors," the comedy, horror, Rock musical being produced by the Judge Story Theatrical Troupe at the Story City Grand Opera House.

Keith Morgan from Story County Emergency Management explains the Hazard Mitigation Planning program of Story County Emergency Management.

The Main Street Cultural District's Artwalk will be on Friday June 5 at 5:00 - 8:00 PM. At KHOI's studios at 410 Douglas, KHOI's very own "Doodle-Squad" will perform a doodle-mural to live music by Michael Martin. Members of the Doodle Squad Ursula Ruedenberg, Jane Graham, Lonna Nachtigal, and Caroline Sallin explain the plan.

Victoria Shopinsky and Anne Kinzel, some of the organizers of the New Ames Progressive Alliance , a new community coalition, explain the alliance's goals and mission.

Long time and outstanding Ames citizen and City Planner Jeff Benson passed away unexpectedly on May 26. We honor his life and accomplishments. Councilwoman Gloria Betcher speaks on behalf of the City of Ames. City Planners Charlie Kuester and Ray Anderson, who worked with Jeff, describe Jeff's work in city planning and the development of Iowa'a Lincoln Highway Association. Also included are two excerpts from a lecture that Jeff Benson gave last year, sponsored by the Ames History Center, about the history of business development in Ames.

Guests Marsha Miller with David and Hannah Gradwohl led us on a tour of cemeteries and memorials that took us to several Civil War graves from Maxwell both North and South to a Stolperstein in Frankfurt, Germany, where Hannah and David just attended a ceremony for Hannah's grandparents. They explored the significance of cemeteries for communities and individuals.

David Rehbein, the former National Commander of the American Legion explains the history, mission and activities of the American Legion, both nationally and within Ames' own local Post #37. He delivers his own personal Memorial Day messages and recognizes some particular individuals whom he thinks of on this day.

Then, co-host Kay Puttock shares her interview with gun dog breeder, trainer, and competitor Laura Miller (pictured here with her championship-winning Viszla, "Bull") of Maxwell.

Kay also speaks with writer Mark Edwards about the evolution of Iowa's state parks, which he used to help manage in his job with the DNR.
