We start off the year with a healthy dose of political science! Host Greta Anderson talks with Hugh Espy of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement , which is holding an issues summit and candidate forum on January 9, then we interview David Redlawsk, visiting fellow at the Harkin Institute for Public Policy and Citizen Engagement , about his two books on the Iowa caucuses, Why Iowa? and one still in the early stage, on this year's race. Keith Morgan, coordinator for Story County Emergency Management Agency , walks us through the chain of events and decisions set off by a 911 phone call. And correspondent Kay Puttock interviews Robin Switzer of Friends of Emma Lee McCarthy Park and Munn Woods (on Facebook) , about that group's work fending off alien species.

KHOI Naturalist Pat Schlarbaum describes the woodpeckers we can see at this time of year, their habits (why do they hammer on wood?) and offers his mother's recipe for putting out winter food they will like. He also interviews renowned birder Erin Brees about the fabled Ivory-billed Woodpecker, its history and reported recent sightings.

Our New Years Eve show featured inteviews with Jeremy and Hawk McIntyre and with Craig Christiansen from the Lucky Pig Pub and Grill in Ogden where Hawk will be performing this New Year’s Eve. Then we spoke with Louis Banitt, president of Red Friars Dance Club which will be hosting a dinner dance with High Society Big Band . Last we heard from Barb and Rich Parker about their trip from Nevada to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl. We also mentioned the party at Lake Robbins Ballroom

Trumpeter Swans, Cuban Farmers and Ames in Winter

This show starts with a phenology report on trumpeter swans from wildlife specialist Pat Schlarbaum. Then there's an interview with Iowa farmers George Naylor and Patti Edwardson about their recent trip to Cuba and the two farming-related conferences they attended there. Hear George and Patti's impressions of Cuban farming, agro-ecology, Cuban society, and more. Finally, Allyson Walter of Ames Convention and Visitors' Bureau tells us about the many things to do (both adult and family-related) in Ames during the cold snowy weather and for the New Year celebrations.

Christmas 2015

We started out the show with a report by Joel Bryan from the ski lift at Seven Oaks Recreation near Boone. Mary O'Donnell from the Slater Area Historical Association gave us a tour of the exhibit “Dear Santa” with letters from the Slater News of the 40s, 50s, and 60s illustrated with pictures, vintage decorations, and antique toys. Then singer-songwriter Reggie Greeenlaw sang "I Don't Want No Ho Ho Ho's" followed by a discussion with Brian Eslinger, professor of religion at Iowa State University, about the ways we find meaning in various traditions at this time of year as well as dealing with the Christmas blues experienced by so many people. We closed with a fable by Brian Eslinger and a family tale by story-teller Maureen J. Korte.
