Today's Local Talk featured Mario Cothen discussing recent litigation concerning racial discrimination at the University of Iowa Athletic Department. Ten members of Iowa football have sued the University of Iowa for 20 million dollars. Erin Rosaker communication specialist with Iowa State University's Office of Strategic Relations and Communication discussed their Cyclone Cares program. 

Halloween in the time of COVID 19

With a real Pandemic stalking the land, Halloween celebrations are all based on the CDC guidelines for social distancing and COVID 19 precautions, so communities in central Iowa are adapting to distributing treats and providing Spooky experiences with recommended safety,  We visited three locations which have creative ways of doing this.  Beth Wessel-Kroeschell, events coordinator for Reiman Gardens in Ames, explained how the traditional "Spirits in the Garden" has been expanded to two weekends to allow for people to enjoy the paths in a more limited way.  Over in Nevada, Erin Peterson, one of the coordinators of Spooktacular Downtown Cruise described that event which kicks off the Halloween weekend in Nevada on Thursday, October 29.  The Boone Convention and Visitors Bureau manager of member services, Kris Blocker, described how much of the Boone Community Theatre has developed a drive through scary drama in Road to Fear performed at the Central Iowa Expo.  We ended our Halloween program with Nevada storyteller Daniel Bagley telling us a spooky ghost story.

As new businesses start and construction continues even during ongoing cases of COVID 19 and in the aftermath of  the derecho.  KHOI takes you on a road trip around our area starting with Henry Corbin, director of Mainstreet Nevada who led us on a tour of Mainstreet Nevada on the newly paved 6th Street. Next stop was Story City, where Jackson Kimle, founder of Midland Seafood,  told us about the process for raising fresh shrimp in the former outlet mall.  On a sadder note we visited Mark Schneider, director of the Iowa Arboretum, telling us how the supporters of the Arboretum have cleaned up after the Derecho and are preparing for a brighter future for the beloved institution [Be sure to check out the video of the work done so far].  Finally Deb Franzenburg described the new Parish Hall being built adjacent to the 130 year old Sacred Heart Catholic Church in .

After Dennis Hart's news, we continued with a program of selections from two League of Women voters programs recorded for KHOI.   The first selections were from a presentation by Anne Kinzel, attorney and a policy specialist with an emphasis on healthcare and healthcare reform, who examined the history of legal restraints which have been mandated to protect public health. The second recording consisted of excerpts from the opening statements of candidates for county office, Latifa Faisal (D), Steve O'Rourke (R), Paul Fitzgerald (D), and Timothy Means.

Ross Wilburn (Democrat) incumbent candidate for State Representative in House District 46, (North Ames and the western parts of Story County), discusses priorities for the next four years, his work in the state legislature, effects of the Coronavirus in the area, and his view that new legislators are needed to move forward with important legislation such as better support for health care or environmental protections. Wilburn assumed the office of State Representative in House District 46 in 2019 and is running unopposed.

NationalHispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15), honors the cultures and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Klever Miranda, president of Latinx Student Initiativesat Iowa State University, talks about being a first generation American. Klever grew up in Des Moines. His parents are from Ecuador. He describes the country of his heritage, as well as the need for ISU students to support each other against feeling marginalized while at the university. 

Susan Gwiasda, Public Relations Officer for the City of Ames and Resource Recovery System Superintendent Bill Schmitt anounce details about No-Charge Yard Waste Days for Story County residents. They also tell you where to bring your used pumpkins and gourds for city composting.  The Great Pumpkin Disposal Program will start up at the end of October when you can bring them to the Resource Recovery Plant at 110 Center Street where containers will be provided at the curb.
