Unable to gather for a memorial service Joanna Courteau, who was active in welcoming international students and visitors to Ames since she arrived in 1973, KHOI prepared a tribute for Local Talk. Gathering for a ZOOM call were former student Gary Stahl (from his UNICEF office in Geneva) , Teresa Satterfield, a friend and colleague who told how Joanna nurtured all students she knew, Roberta Vann of Iowa State, and Mijka Jankwiak, a member of the "Polish club," described her way of bringing people of all ages and nationalities together in unforgettable ways.  Greta Anderson and Alex Fejfer of the Ames Historical Society told how Joanna worked with other volunteers to honor the "Martin House," home to the first black students at Iowa State. We concluded with an unforgettable story "Hermit No More" by Joanna herself recorded for Moth Radio, (check the link https://themoth.org/storytellers/joanna-courteau).

Dave Cook, co-chair of the Boone Welcome Train Project, told us about the monumental project of moving a steam engine, a tender, and a passenger car to their new location on HWY 30 and Story Street to welcome visitors to Boone. Then, from Legacy Learning in Webster City, Madalyn Loring told us about her "Fantastic Creature" workshop -- an online sculpture workshop adapted to the restrictions of COVID-19.  And finally, Erica Peterson, CEO of Boys and Girls Clubs of Story County, told us how they had kept their program open this summer with the social distancing needed during the pandemic.

The major focus of today's show was a presentation of segments from the fourth and final presentation of the series Taking the Lead: Policing and Justice jointly sponsored by the Ames Branch of the NAACP and the City of Ames.  Edna Clinton, president of the Ames Branch of the NAACP introduced tonight's speakers -- Moderator Dan Culhane, president and CEO of the Ames Chamber of Commerce; John Haila, Mayor of Ames; and Wendy Wintersteen, Iowa State University President.  They discussed ways that Ames and Iowa State University can increase their welcome to a diverse population.

Leanne Harter was with us again with the Story County Report.  What started as a non-controversial program about what steps schools in our area are taking to re-open this fall, turned into a discussion of the question marks raised by Gov. Reynolds' July 17 proclamation outlining the state Board of Education's directives-- which conflict with virtually all the plans the school districts have spent months developing.  After that the show went to the birds when Jay Wilson from the Story City Greater Chamber Connection telling us about National Carousel Day century celebrated in Story City on their century old carousel, where their animals include a rooster.  Other important birds in Story City are the rubber duckies that usually have a great race floating down the skunk river (to keep away the crowds in the era of COVID-19, they were only memories this year).  Keeping with that theme Pat Scholarbaum brought us a phenology on hummingbirds to close out our show.

Local Talk for July 17, 2020 featured Doug Harr, President of Iowa Audubon discussing birding during Covid19 adaptations. Some legislation Doug mentioned to support were: Recovering America’s Wildlife Act, Great American Outdoor Act, Safe Buildings Act, Migratory Bird Protection Act, and Climate Change Solutions Act. Susan Gwiasda, City of Ames, invited Keith Abraham to talk about Parks and encouraged citizens to join the annual Parks celebration by camping out in your backyard July 25. Anna Bananna added a delightful Heart to Heart message to conclude the show.

Our program today started with Steve Johnson, Farm Management Specialist with ISU Extension, giving us a brief overview of the complex government programs and issues that today's farmers need to navigate to make decisions.  Our discussion centered around disturbing recently published research indicating how disproportionately large farmers were benefiting and small farmers were suffering from current prices and supports.  As our discussion compared the present to the  Farm Crisis of the '80s,  historian Pamela Riney-Kehrberg told us about her research into that time .  Turning to collective activism, Ava Auen-Ryan announced a series of community conversations taking place throughout the state

Dennis Hart and Paul Wierson discussed another issue that became a major story only in the age of Covid 19 -- Meat packing plants and alternatives.
