Sandra Looft and Elizabeth Wentzel, from Kidical Mass and Ames Bicycle Coalition announce SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL - a meeting to bring together all people from parents to pubic officials, concerned about developing plans for making pedestrian and bike traffic safe in Ames. The meeting will be held at the Public Library on August 9 at 7:00 PM. Caius Danely, middle school student who rides a bike to school, describes his route and bike safety, along with his mother, Karen Danley.

Patty Yoder from Food At First invites you to participate in an annual corn day where they need volunteers to pick, husk, and process corn for their year's supply to give out as free food to all that need nourishment. August 7 from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

Keith Morgan, Story County Emergency Management Coordinator, uses the story of a recent fire at an apartment building in Ames to illustrate how emergency bring together many agencies - including government, non-profits, business and the university - to address fire victims' needs.

Both questions are answered in this show, along with Where Is Abbie Sawyer Elementary School? Kathy Hanson of Ames Community School District talks about "Camp Sawyer" (last year's make-do encampment at old Edwards), the new school's ribbon cutting August 18, and "Sawyer Speaks," a spoken word learning program being launched at the school this year.

We then hear from Abbie Sawyer, of Abbie and the Sawyers, the band performing at Roosevelt Summer Sundays concert series. KHOI will be broadcasting this concert on August 10 as part of its Summer Sessions series.

Iowa Home Consulting's Matt Bradner describes his work gathering furniture for the Rummage Rampage, a city-wide attempt to reduce the waste left in the wake of the annual August 1 apartment turnover. Shop Saturday through Monday for gently used items.

Hosts Paul Wierson and Zach Neuendorf

Paul started things off with an interview from Story City's St. Petri Lutheran Church Youth Director Kristin Johnson and high school student Grant Berrends who have just returned from a week-long mission trip in Puerto Rico.

Zach put together an interview with Linden Ramsay, a recent high school graduate who talked about what it's like being the T in the LGBT community in small town Iowa.

Our last piece was put together by KHOI Intern Isaac Biehl, who took a visit to Nevada's newest business, Time Out Entertainment, a family owned arcade. Isaac spoke with Chris Harding-Ristau and her two sons Lance and Logan about the challenges and joys of opening a new business with the family.

Eric Hatfield and Perry Davis from our sister station WHYR in Baton Rouge talk about the events of the past few weeks and how they have used community radio to help the necessary dialogue about race and policing begin.

The Ames Progressive Alliance continues a conversation it started last week about these issues, with an all-star lineup of guests: Malik Burton and Julian Neely, ISU students involved in Black Lives Matters, pastor David Knight of New Birth Baptist Church, Dr. Anthony Jones, vice-principal of Ames Middle School, and Chuck Cychosz, chief of Ames Police.

Adam Brimeyer, manager at DG's Taphouse, presents the lineup for Sunday night, including Jordan Mayland and the Detonators (with several Ames personnel) and headliner Devin Frank Vanishing Blues Band. Devin Frank got his musical start playing with Poison Control Center (currently on hiatus), and shares some of his memories of PCC's heyday in Ames in the early 2000s.

Themes of waterways, wildlife, and especially birds weave through this show, beginning with the visit of Bill Stowe, director of Des Moines Water Works, to Ames on Monday, to discuss water quality. ICCI organizers are launching a campaign for a moratorium on hog confinements, saying that the state has reached saturation, with 7 hogs for every 1 person.

Summer intern Isaac Biehl explores the Pokemon Go! phenomenon with ISU student Tate Huckstadt; meanwhile our Local Talk engineer Jonah DeGeest catches a pidgey and pidgeotto in our studio. Evidently, our radio station provides good habitat for these imaginary birds.

Wildlife correspondent Pat Schlarbaum tells us of the Iowa DNA’s work in this 18th year of bringing osprey back to Iowa, and the many types of volunteers who are involved in the project. Young birds are taken from nests in osprey-rich Minnesota at an age where they are old enough to eat a fish on their own, but young enough not to remember their Minnesota roots.

Speaking of native birds, Nevada poet Jennifer L. Knox tells us of her crowd-sourced poetry project, Iowa Bird of Mouth, by which anyone can add words / lines / verses to a poem created each month about 12 different birds of Iowa. The project starts this September 1 with the American Goldfinch, Iowa's state bird.
