Australian Chamber Orchestra & ARC

The upcoming performance of the Australian Chamber Orchestra in Ames was the focus of Wednesday’s Local Talk program. Peter Riley, a board member of the Ames International Orchestra Festival (AIOFA), which is sponsoring the ensemble’s visit to Ames, said the group is comprised of relatively young musicians, most of whom perform standing up. The curtain goes up Monday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m. in C.Y. Stephens Auditorium. Also on Wednesday’s Local Talk show, KHOI reporter Roxanne Thompson talked to Kathy Schnable about the work of the ARC of Story County, which provides support and services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

An interview with ACLU honoree Dan Johnston originally scheduled for Wednesday will be aired at a later date.

KHOI Studios Nearing Completion

platoon of volunteer Rembrandts spent a weekend in March turning KHOI’s nearly completed suite of studios into colorful spaces. The painters were recruited and supervised by KHOI board member Chris Lyng, who rolled his share of stem green onto studio walls while coordinating the efforts of the volunteers.

Spring is here at last! Thursday, March 20, is the first official day of Spring, the Vernal Equinox. Equinox comes from the Greek language and means “equal night”, it is the day when there are 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night, the whole world over. There are 2 equinoxes each year, one in the Spring and one in the Fall. The Vernal Equinox is the one where the balance between day and night is tilting toward the day, and the days are getting longer.

Earth centered traditions celebrate the Vernal Equinox as the holiday Ostara. Reverend Selena Fox of Circle Sanctuary in Wisconsin describes the holiday thusly, “Vernal Equinox, also known as Ostara, occurs in the middle of March. It marks the beginning of Spring and the time when days and nights are of equal length. The colors associated with the Ostara festival are yellow, for the strengthening sun and the celebration of this holiday at dawn, and green because it represents the sprouting of new plant life. This is a festival of rebirth and reawakening from Winter’s slumber: the first official day of spring!

Birds, Drones and Zoning

Wednesday’s Local Talk show covered a broad range of topics, starting with KHOI's phenology reporter Pat Schlarbaum telling us about three harbingers of spring: killdeer, turkey vultures and red winged blackbirds. Then the question of limiting the use of drone aircraft was discussed by drone hobbyist Scott Dearinger, who reported on an Iowa State Senate hearing he attended recently. The mission of the Iowa Air National Guard unit in Des Moines is being changed from flying F-16 aircraft to piloting drones, and that has generated concerns by members of the Catholic Worker House in Des Moines. David Goodner talked about the 2014 Midwest Catholic Worker Faith and Resistance Retreat, scheduled for March 14-17 in Des Moines, which will focus on drone warfare and the new Des Moines Drone Command Center. Finally, Ames resident Sharon Guber (pictured) described plans to develop land around the former Ames Middle School, and why she and others in the College Creek Old Middle School Neighborhood Association object to the proposed housing project.

In the first part of our program we talked with Ames City Manager Steve Schainker about a recent Ames City Council decision regarding approval for a grant from the newly formed Reinvestment District Program on 24 acres in the flood plain on South 16th Street for building a Field Station Dinasaur Camp, Menards home improvement store, motel, and restaurant.

In the last part of our program we spoke with Maria La France, a woman who is advocating for legalization of medical marijuana.

This program was unusually diverse, beginning locally with KHOI's phenology reporter Pat Schlarbaumam telling us about the red-tailed hawks mating now, Jerry Rupert, Assistant Director of the Outdoor Recreation Program at ISU gave our reporter Rebekka Brown tips about favorite vacation spots in Iowa, and Mayor Brett Comegys of Collins reported on how the Iowa Retail Initiative Program is working in his town. In the last segment was an interview with Bob Inglis, longtime Repubican Representative from South Carolina who was in Ames last week speaking about Carbon Fee and Dividend as a solution to mitigate climate change.

Passenger Pigeons, Artist Naomi Friend, Arc of Story County

The story is told of the passenger pigeon, once the most numerous bird in the United States, whose dramatic demise highlights the ongoing species extinction crisis. The story of their extinction is told in anticipation of a lecture called “The Extinction of the Passenger Pigeon” by Stanley Temple, Senior Fellow and Science Adviser with the Aldo Leopold Foundation. Mr. Temple will be speaking March 6th at the Great Hall in the memorial Union at 7:00 PM.

Artist and ISU student Naomi Friend talks about her artwork, which is on display at the Stomping Grounds Café in Ames. The art works, a combination of watercolors, and prints of photographs on paper, wood, and canvas include images of farm buildings and farm houses, family members, Iowa landscapes. Friend describes it as, “art about land and life in the Midwest.”

As part of KHOI’s Community Service Appreciation project, Tricia Crane, executive director of the Arc of Story County, describes how that organization partners with local businesses, providers and community members to enrich the lives of people with disabilities.
