Sam Wormley, KHOI board member and Cohost of Science Bytes joins us; to discuss what can we do locally to reduce our CO2 foot print. This includes electric vehicles their major advantages, sales, charge station information, maintenance requirements, and some other ideas to help reduce our CO2 footprint. Dr. Tyler Harms discusses Iowa’s White-tailed Deer population and COVID-19’s association with these critters. Erica Place, Outreach Coordinator for SCConservation joins us for our monthly visit. Erica shares some Story County Conservation upcoming outdoor activities planned for us to take part in.

Susan Gwiasda Public Information Officer for the City of Ames and Electric Distribution Manager , Mike Brown.updates us on the next City council meetings, a few city activities and we spend time discussing electric outages in winter months- how to be prepared for an outage. When crews are not responding to emergencies, routine maintenance and system upgrades that are happening all year. Mike also encourages those thinking of potential jobs to consider employment as an electric line worker.

Dennis Hart provides his weekly summary from the pages of the Des Moines Register. Tammy Koolbeck, Executive Director of CY Stephens Auditorium,and KHOI board member, discusses upcoming shows at CY Stephens, the Goldfinch Room, and the Susan Werner concert. A portion of the ticket sales will be donated to KHOI community Radio. Keith Morgan Story County Emergency Management Coordinator Reviews what is involved with Emergency Management and the increasing qualifications it takes to assume the management role including: Research conducted by  ISU: benefits from voluntary contributions of non-expert citizens to resilience assessment, use of micro-grids to provide power to critical infrastructure,Decision making. Mentoring, Internships and training opportunities are discussed. Cari McPartland, Salvation Army Service Center Administrator,  discusses the need for services especially in response to the pandemic but the upcoming holiday season and the stain it puts on the demand for services. Volunteer opportunities are also highlighted.

Elections and Upcoming Events

Our first order of business was announcing some of the results of yesterday's election. Barb Pedersen, committee chairperson of the voter services committee of the Ames and Story County League of Women Voters, was on hand to discuss the ways KHOI could make voter information --our candidate interviews and the local forums recorded by our volunteers, available to the public, both on broadcasts and through our website. Mara Spooner of the Fair Trade Store Worldly Goods, discussed their business model and the Benefit Events where part of the sales receipts will be donated to local organizations. We ended the show with two remarkable events coming up in the next few days.  Deborah Marquart, editor of the children's book The Moo Cow Came Traveling , described the book launch that will be held this Sunday, November 8, 2-3 p.m. at the Ames Public Library with the book illustrator, Dorothia Rohner and an appearance with author Mark Muholland ZOOMING in from Ireland.  And up in Briggs Woods by Webster City, Maureen Seamonds tells us of the annual harvest dinner for Legacy Learning with Kelly Boone leading the fun on Monday evening from 5:30 p.m. on Monday, November 9. Susan Gwiasda Communications Officer for the City of Ames items to share include city meeting Thursday, reopening/ribbon cutting Ada Hayden fishing pier. 

Resource Recovery Superintendent Bill Schmitt discusses the first No-Charge Yard Waste Day the past weekend and the next chances coming up to dispose of leaves. Also, he’ll give an update on the Great Pumpkin Disposal and other opportunities to reduce waste and reviews recycling options for batteries, glass, and used oils.

Local Talk for Friday, October 29 started with recap of the news from this week from pages of Ames Tribune by Dennis Hart.  Virginia Nichols presented the third segment of her soil health story.  Susan Gwiasda invited Jason Ziph, with Ames Fire Department discussing October Fire Safety Month.  Yard waste can be delivered cost free to recycling area at 400 Freel Drive Saturday, October 30. Music was provided by Warren Zevon, Werewolves of London.

Stephanie and Todd Burras of Wild Birds Unlimited join us for our monthly visit to learn about some of our feathered friends and other wild critters. Mike, Pat, and others express appreciation for Ursula Rudenberg’s efforts to get KHOI on the air and the opportunity she gave to us to become part of the KHOI family. Susan Gwiasda Communications Officer for the City of Ames provides updates for meetings and events planned for the city.Municipal Engineer, Tracy Peterson will share information about the opening of the South Grand Avenue extension and the work that went into making that project happen; reminds listeners of the ribbon cutting celebration at 2 pm on Friday, Oct. 29th.

Belligerent Raccoons, UAW Speaks, a Local Business Called Iowa Parklands

The reasons for an encounter with a belligerent raccoon are explored, then Dennis Hart provides a roundup of Iowa news. 

Laura Belin explains why the workers at John Deere are striking and the current status of the conflict with the plant management. She provides an interview with an Ankeny representative of the striking UAW (United Automobile, Aerospace, and Agricultural Implement Workers of America) who explains why 90% of the union members voted to strike "as long as necessary," especially after sacrifices are made during the Pandemic and John Deere's profits have increased dramatically.

Matt Scott, from Ankeny, describes his business, Iowa Parklands, that provides detailed maps of trails in Iowa Parks, including maps on bandana's. His web site also sells maps for download, posters, stickers, playing cards, and has a blog discussing the details of various Iowa's parks. He describes how his business connects with the love and memories people have about parks.

Linn Cipperly-Price, veterinary technician, provided a story about Animal Protection and Education APE at their Boone office at 801 Mamie Eisenhower Ave. They feature spaying, neutering, vaccinating and microchipping cats and dogs at low cost. Difficult Topics from Breast Cancer to Exterminating Diseases

Our show started with our monthly report from Leanne Harter, Story County Outreach and Special Projects Manager. We then heard from Kim Harms, an author from Huxley who told us why she wrote her personal story "Navigating the World of Mastectomies and Breast Reconstruction"  and read some moving passages.  Since epidemics have been on our minds recently we were fortunate to have guests who could tell us what it means to have a disease eradicated. For smallpox we heard from Prof Alan Marcus, chair of the History Department at Mississippi State University and author of works focusing on the History of Technology, Science, Medicine.  A decades long effort by Rotary International has focused on worldwide  efforts to eradicate polio. One of the people actually part of this is Susan Herrick from Boone, who told what is involved in eliminating polio from the earth.
