A meeting is planned to be held in Elkader Iowa to discuss plans being made, to build a 10,000 head cattle feed lot in the watershed for Bloody Run Creek, a cold water trout stream North of Dubuque. Environmentalist author Larry Stonediscusses the water qualities issues that are involved. Stone was an outdoor writer and photographer for the Des Moines Register and is author of many environmentalist books including Listen to the LandCitizen of the Natural World, and Gladys Black: The Legacy of Iowa’s Bird Lady, and Iowa: Portrait of the Land

Patricia Izbicki,  graduate student in neuroscience at Iowa State has recently been recognized as an Iowa Woman of Innovation by the TechnologyAssociation of Iowa, one of ten women so recognized. She is researching  , how music affects the human brain, nervous system, and various diseases . She explains her research, together with her major professor, Dr. Elizabeth Stegemoller.

Alex Fejfar from the Ames Historical Society came in for his monthly visit and told us about their new exhibit about Ames High School through the years. Riley Drake, from the Anti-Racism Collaborative (ARC of Ames) and a counselor at Sawyer Elementary, spoke about a series of free workshops on combatting racism. Immigration issues, particularly DACA and sanctuary, were discussed with Cornelia Flora, Professor Emeritus of ISU, and Gabriela Flora, Program Director for the American Friends Service Committee in Denver. In addition, we talked with Jeanette Vizguerra, who was named as one of Time Magazine’s Most Influential People of 2017.

In response to a report from the Department of Natural Resources saying a larger than expected number of Monarch butterflies had landed in their winter home in Mexico, nature reporter Pat Schlarbaum talked with Steven Bradbury from the about the Monarch Conservation Consortium about the decline in Monarch butterflies in recent years and efforts to reverse it by farmers and landowners.  Jessie Lowry, conservation director at the Blank Park Zoo, told us about the Plant, Grow, Fly gardens to feed Monarch Butterflies on their migration.

Tanya shares her own life story about how she built and changed careers.

Our first guest was Mara MacKay,  director of the Boone County Historical Society, to fill us in about some of the possibilities under discussion concerning the future of the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace in Boone.  In preparation for the city election coming up next Tuesday, November 7, Ames 3rd Ward Candidates Rob Bowers and David Martin came into the station to tell us their approach to their constituents, door-knocking,  and each other. 

Susan Gwiasda wrapped up the program telling us what to expect from the Ames city government the month.

Our program today consisted of stories about dramas and historic movie theatres.   Our first guests were Karen Niblockdirector, and Don Zolidisplaywright, telling about the satire "Breaking News," which will have its premiere showing on the stage of Josephine Tope Community Auditorium.   At the Ankeny Community Threatre Michael Porche directed a suspenseful drama "The God Committee"  in partnership with the Iowa Donor Network to raise awareness about organ donation with this production. 

The balance of our program deals with the activities taking place at two historic theatres in our listening area.  Larry Sloan, owner of the Talent Factory [historic Camelot] in Nevada tells us what it's like to have your theatre used for a movie set.  We ended the show with Todd Thorson sharing the story of why Monroe Crossing is returning to the Story City Grand Opera House this Thursday..

A roundup of some area news from last week, from the Iowa Informer. A medley of some Ames residents talking about why they love decorating their front yards for Halloween and Halloween music by local composer Clark Ford"Spiderwebs In My Hair." Anna Somch, Nevada resident and regular KHOI volunteer, is a "Haunter," who has worked in Spook houses since she was 5 years old. She explains some of what goes on there and why she loves it. Bambi Yost, Associate Professor at ISU College of Design, explains the need for children to experience risk and fear when playing. Daniel Bagley, professional storyteller from Nevada, tells a ghost story. Bagley is a member of the Des Moines Two Rivers Story Spinners and the NorthlandsStorytelling Network.
