Margo Foreman, Director of Iowa State University's Office of  Equal Opportunity and Title IX Coordinator, discusses the rescinding of the Obama administration's Title IX guidelines, announced by Betsy DeVos the Secretary of EducationTaylor Yocom's acclaimed "Guarded" photo exhibit features portraits of everyday college students posing with the varied items they choose to carry for self-defense against sexual assault. Taylor describes how the show started as an academic finals project and went viral internationally after actress/musician Zooey Deschanel posted the project on the "Hello Giggles" on-line blog for women. Allyson Walter from the Ames Convention and Visitors Bureau gives an update on coming public events in our area.

The show began with the weekly news roundup with Dennis Hart. Host, Gale Seiler, interviewed Kirstin Sullivan, who is a Government teacher at Ames HS. She talked about how the school aims to develop young people who are politically aware and engaged. She also shared her perspective on the conversations around the recent student actions against racism and injustice and the learning that occurred leading up to the protests and since.

Alex Fejfar from the Ames Historical Society filled us in their new exhibit about immigration, called Trunks, Hands and Hearts. From Susan Franzen, we heard about an important moment in Ames LGBT history – which she was a part of – that illustrates the importance of political engagement.

Ambassador Kenneth Quinn, president of the World Food Prize, spoke with us about the proposal he made in the Op Ed in the Des Moines Register, Agriculture could be key to easing U.S.-North Korea tensions.  His idea was inspired by a painting of the 1959 visit of then Soviet Premiere Nikita Khrushchev to the farm of Roswell Garst.,an event which opened the door to reducing the danger of nuclear war during the Cold War.  Our next guest was Liz Garst, who remembers the visit and also could explain the story behind it.  

 
A follow-up Editorial in the Des Moines Register led me to wonder about organizations that might provide channels for communication with North Korea today, I spoke with Daniel Jasper the author of an article directly addressing this question, Opening More Channels with US-North Korean Relations.  He was our third guest in exploring this important topic.
 
Ending the program on a lighter note, Barb Mallon telling us about "Night at the Museum" at the Slater Area Historical Association.

Nicci Port from the ISU Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Joel Hocjstein, Chair of Ames Pride discuss the founding of Ames Pride, a brand-new community-based organization for community-building among LGBTQA+ people, educating the community on issues affecting LGBTQA+ people, and for facilitating an environment that values the intersectional identities of all people living in and around the City of Ames, IA.

Merry Rankin, Director of Sustainability at ISU and the City of Ames, together with Lia Gomez, Sustainability Director for Iowa State University’s Student Government, announce the creation of a new fund created by Student Government: The Green Initiatives Fund, to allow student organizations to have a dedicated funding source related to increasing and enhancing sustainability events, initiatives and projects at ISU.

Leanne Harter Story County Outreach and Special Projects Manager, was on hand to give us news of the tree sale at McFarland Park sponsored by Alliant Energy's Operation ReLeaf at Easat Peterson Park, Thursday, October 19, 4:30 p.m. Our main story was about DACA – Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. We have a couple of “Dreamers” to tell their stories. Rick Exner, local activist for immigrant rights, told us about Several events to inform people about proposed changes in the law. Jennifer Reese, founder of Leonessa LLC, a Green Business Incubator in Story City spoke with reporter Pat Schlarbaum about the concept and the buildings on Broad Street.

Host, Gale Seiler, spoke with Megan Myers, a faculty member in the Latino/a Studies Program at ISU. Dr. Myers provided an historical perspective on the political and economic position of Puerto Rico. Students Laura Valderrama, Ashley Steen and Luis Gonzalez spoke about their family members on the island and how hurricanes Irma and Maria impacted them, as well as the difficulty of communicating with them and being uncertain of their safety.

Susan Franzen interviewed Bernard McDonald, from Simpson College, who will be guest conductor for Central Iowa Symphony's first concert of the season, Worlds Lost and Found. Susan Gwiasda, the Public Relations Officer for the City of Ames provided information on upcoming events and the Ames Community Solar Initiative.

Elkader - Memoriam Festival for Emir Abdelkader September 29 - October 1 - Mayor Josh Pope and  Vice President of Elkader International Connections, Sharon Seney described the history of the relationship of this small Iowa town with the greatest hero of Algerian independence who inspired town founders to name their town for him in 1846.  This choice has led to many exchanges between Elkader, Iowa, and Mascara, Algeria, since they became official Sister Cities in 1984.  For this festival, distinguished visitors came from Algeria.  Kheira  Benkaddour, interpreter and one of the majors cooks for the Algerian buffet, gave us a personal comparison between Elkader and Mascara.

 
Colfax (Jasper County Fairgrounds) - TinyFest Midwest September 22-24 - Maggie Westvold and KHOI videographer Aaron O'Neill took a road trip to explore the "simple living" part of the festival.  Jay Shafer, the founder of the movement, talked about how his concept of the "tiny house" has developed since he was a student in Iowa City.  Among our most unusual interviews was with Paul Van Gorkum of GoServe Global showing the "Safety Houses" designed to provide shelter in hurricane plagued areas.  Renee McLaughlin summed up purpose and success for the Fest.   
 
Randall - Ragtime for Randall is celebrating its 31st year October 7 - President of the Randall Fine Arts Council, Don Brekke, described the upcoming concert and Randall's place in the world of ragtime music, followed by feature performer Daniel Souvigny.

Lynn Ballard,and niece Bailee Ballard, describe how the 19-year annual Ames Haunted Forest - a "family hobby"of three generations of the Ballard family - is an award-winning creative outlet for many ISU students, who express their own inner ghoul. The Haunted Forest opens this Friday, October 6, and will be open every Friday and Saturday throughout October.

Jennifer Brockpahler, director of Ames Community Arts Council, describes the Ames Area Studio Tour that will happen Saturday, October 7 and Sunday, October 8. Maps for the tour can be picked up at KHOI and various businesses and Worldly Goods will be the information headquarters. A map can also be found on their web site (link above).
