Greg Vitale, a founding member of Outdoor Alliance of Story County, told us about the formation of that organization, a non-profit that can raise money for projects and land acquisitions for parks and trail in Story County.  His particular focus today was on the informational meeting on March 10 to let the public know about the new Tedesco Environmental Learning Corridor in South Ames.  Nature Reporter Pat Schlarbaum carried on the outdoor theme with a report on woodpeckers, especially the pileated woodpecker with its distinctive drumming on hollow trees.  Pastor Marcia Kisner told how the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cambridge is keeping its 115 year old church bell ringing by putting on a comedy dinner theatre, A Bad Year for Tomatoes, in the new Cambridge City Center this weekend.  Mary Logsdon, director of Adult Services at the Ames Public Library, came to the KHOI studio to tell us about the many ways the library is partnering with the Story County Genealogical Society.  She was joined by Alice Hoyt Veen, Certified Genealogist. who will be teaching A Genealogy Proof Standard course to guide people in evaluating the materials they find.

After the weather and Iowa news headlines, Mary Logsdon and Qin Yan told about what is planned in Ames to celebrate International Women’s Day on Sunday, May 4th at the Ames Library. Jamet Colton, who will be the keynote speaker, shared why she loves attending this event.

Erin Davison-Rippey, from Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, provided updates on their efforts to oppose restrictive abortion legislation and other assaults to women’s reproductive health care. Allyson Walter from the Ames Convention & Visitors Bureau stopped to provide updates on an array of local happenings in March.

Ames civic reporter Dennis Hart provides a summary of last week’s local news from the pages of the Ames Tribune and related newspapers.

KHOI environmental reporter Pat Schlarbaum brings voices from the Des Moines Capital Building from a recent day of lobbying for implementation of the NaturalResources and Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund,  was created in 2010 in a statewide referendum.

Progressive Alliance members Anne Kimbell and Carolyn Myers spoke with Ames City Councilman Dave Martin and Ames resident Jim Popken about the possibility of municipally owned Internet service, including how this could protect net neutrality. Pam Mackey-Taylor was with us today to explain the implications of the Iowa Senate's bill affecting energy conservation and dis-incentives for using solar power (SF2311).  The featured young artists Chris Kim and Joanna Kim from the February 4 Central Iowa Symphony Young Artists Concert described their musical experiences thus far and plays short excerpts from the concertos they will play with CIS.  Kris Corbin gave us a preview of the Murder Mystery Dinner, Murder in the Caribbean, put on at the Dyer-Dowell House by the Nevada Historical Society.  Finally we were joined by Travis Cooper, Actor, and Lori Sulzberger, Managing Director, telling us about Story Theatre Company's teen production of Twelve Angry Jurors.

Dennis Hart gives a roundup of last week's local news from the pages of the Ames Tribune and related local papers.

Jingtao Wang, Principal of the Ames Chinese Language Academy and students of the Academy, Daniel, Megan, Grace, James, Willow, and Amy, deliver a Chinese New Year's greeting for the Year of the Dog, and tell KHOI reporter Susan Franzen about this unique local school which teaches Chinese language, history, and culture. 

Two performance events will be happening in Ames during the celebration period (1) ISU: Feb 18th at Students and Chinese Academy students perform at Memorial Union Great Hall; (2) Chinese GalaFeb 23rd, at City Auditorium - a professional team from mainland China will present acrobatics, dance, magic, folk art and other traditional Chinese arts. 

Ames resident, Joan Gordon, has been a figure skating judge for more than 40 years, as well as a skater herself and describes the world of figure skating and judging, the Ames Skaters' Club, and Parks and Recreation classes at the skating rink.

Pat Schlarbaum notifies us about the global Backyard Bird Count that will turn ordinary bird lovers like you into "citizen scientists" from Feb 16 -19 in association with the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology.   Results can be paoted at

Dr.Anthony Jones, Director of Student Services for the Ames Community School District, describes programs for special needs students and student retention programs in Ames Schools and comments on how school shootings affect schools and students.

Leanne Harter brought us Story County's February Report.  Pat Schlarbaum's Valentine phenology featured red tail hawks. Mike Coverdale told us how International Exchange Students at Nevada High School have enriched the community, as well as bringing experiences back to their home countries.  We continued last week's discussion of the Farm Bill 2018 with Aaron Lehman, president of Iowa Farmers Union    We covered specifics about  the practical challenges facing farmers and small towns alike as Congress prepares to balance the interests of nutrition, conservation, commodities, and crop insurance with a smaller budget and more financially stressed farmers.
