Local Talk for April 2 included Dennis Hart's recap of the news from the pages of the Ames Tribune.  2009 Poet Laureate of Iowa, Mary Swander, provided a delightful background for her podcasts that can be enjoyed at AgArts from Horse and Buggy Land.  Ron Edwards with Ames Animal Shelter provided a great summary of current cats in the shelter, no dogs, yet an adorable rabbit hoping for a foster home.  More information at AmesAnimalShelter.com.  Anna Banana featured heart warming Heart to Heart messages to round out the show.

Outstanding Native Women: Mary Young Bear and Maria Pearson

We focused on two outstanding Native American Women -- Mary YoungBear, Meskwaki, who was inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame in 2020.  Maria Pearson, Yankton Sioux, who is known as "The Founding Mother of the modern Indian repatriation movement," and NAGPRABoth spent their childhood outside Iowa, but were strongly influenced by their Native grandmothers.

We have an interview with Mary Young Bear about the remarkable history of the Meskwaki Settlement in Tama County, where she is Art Conservator and Curator at the MeskwakiCultural Center and Museum.  Students from Wartburg College (Silvia Oakland, Dominic Hanson, Courney Stucker, Nathan Stephany, Lauren Wisdom, Anshika Singh ) are preparing a video documentary about Maria Pearson and had a lot to tell us about their research and how they are adapting journalism to video production.

Susan Qwiasda, City of Ames Public Relations Officer provided updates on golf course openings a few construction updates and future meeting notices.

 Rich Higgins, Ames Fire Chief, talked As we transition into the spring season. We review some basic fire safety practices. Reviewed In home  smoke detectors  and CO2 detectors, planning and practice business and home fire escape procedures. Reviewed outdoor City Ordinances and recreational fire safety.

Story County Conservation announcements re: use of trails and precautions to take to keep the trail in good condition and safely enjoy using them.

Dennis Hart provided an excellent recap of the week in the news for the Ames Tribune.  Chris Adkins, naturalist for the Dallas County Conservation Board provided a wonderful iteration concerning starting a fire with bow drill design.  The ceremonial fire for spring equinox March 21 was described in detail.  Kayley Barrios Lane discussed energy programs for the City of Ames.  And Anna Banana included Carole Pluckrose in person virtually on Zoom from London with her poetry.

Iowa Land--from Dakota and Meskwaki to Vanishing Farmsteads

We started with a discussion of the The Road I Grew Up On: Requiem for a Vanishing Era a recent publication by Helen Gunderson.  Cornelia Flora, author of  Rural Communities: Legacy and Change discussed this important project.  Turning to the history of the Dakota, who left Iowa as it was becoming a state, Kevin Mason, History Professor at Wartburg College, explained their response to US government policies in his upcoming article Inkaputa in Iowa: Dakota Decline, Dispossession and Erasure.  Ray Youngbear, Meskwaki writer, musician, performing artist and American Book Award Recipient (2016) explained how he and his wife are raising their children, passing on their culture and values on the Meskwaki Settlement in Tama County.
