Tune into KHOI for a day-long celebration in praise of our planet on April 24, from 7:45 am to 6 pm.  

This day is produced in partnership with the City of Ames, and features ISU Sustainability, local experts, ISU students, Ames High School and Ames Middle School students, other young entrepreneurs, stories, and events showcasing our community's dedication to sustainability in the 21st century. 

Hosted by KHOI’s Pat Schlarbaum and Mike Meetz together with City of Ames staff: Susan Gwiasda, Paul Tauke, Tracy Peterson, Liz Calhoun, Don Kom, and ISU’s Merry Rankin.

Earth Week: Meditating with Trees, Boating on Ada Hayden

Dennis Hart gives a summary of Iowa news.

Gary Guthry, farmer who lives near Shipley IA, begins Earth Week with a description of  tree "labyrinth" he planted, where one will be able to walk on clover paths among many species of native Iowa trees and ground bushes to read poems provided on signs, contemplate, and be rejuvenated by the tall silent beings. Guthrie reads some poems on the air and speaks a bit about the history of labyrinths and the personal meaning for him to have this natural place of meditation in the agricultural landscape.

Liz Zuercher, Executive Director of the Story County Community Foundation, introduces one of the recipients of the foundation's community grants. Last December, the Foundation gave out grants to 13 Story County organizations to improve and sustain life in the county. They introduce one of these once a month on Local Talk. Today, Chris white from the Skunk RIver Paddlers described how a grant they received jump-started their fundraising effort to pay for the construction of an accessible boat ramp at Ada Hayden Park so that many more people, including Chris, herself, will be able to join the fun of boating on the water at Ada Hayden.

Jessica Nelson, graduate research assistant in sustainable agriculture at Iowa State University, told us about the STRIPS  (“Science-based Trials of Rowcrops Integrated with Prairie Strips” which is an experimental program conducted through ISU Extension to work with farmers to determine the results of retaining and enriching soil in fields with strategically placed strips of prairie plants intermixed with corn and soybeans.  

Going from fields to rivers, we talked to Nate Hoogeveen director of river programs forthe Iowa DNR. His role is to oversee diverse efforts, including river science, survey, construction, grant administration, data and mapping services, and program planning.  Much of our discussion concerned Nate's guide "Paddling Iowa," the 4th edition of which is coming out this month(warning no online description is available for the 2021 edition).

Katherine Herrington, president & CEO of the West Des Moines Chamber, told us about the Black and Brown Business Summit, Thursday Apr 22, 2021 Friday Apr 23, 2021.  Go to the website to find out how to get virtual tickets to see local minority owned businesses displays.  The impressive list of sponsors indicates the effort established Iowa businesses are making to provide opportunities for diversity and to grow the share of minority owned businesses.

Local Talk for Friday April 9 included a great summary of the news from the pages of the Ames Tribune by Dennis Hart.  Merry Rankin, Sustainability Coordinator for the City of Ames and Iowa State University invited Anne Owens, Volunteer Center for Story County to talk about Stash the Trash program this weekend at Jack Trice Stadium.  Kayley Barrios Lain, Electric Services Coordinator, discussed community Earth Month Scavenger Hunt to empower the community to learn good things about our home.  Municipal Engineer, Tracey Peterson appeared with Susan Gwiasda Public Relations Officer for the City of Ames to interpret the major flood plain renovation project along Ioway Creek and South Duff.  The goal is to mitigate perilous floodwaters associated along South Fifth St. and allow Ioway Creek and cleaner convergence with South Duff bridge. The goal is to lower flood events in  that area by two feet. As always Anna Banana spun her creative magic with another welcome installment of Heart to Heart.

Betty Andrews and Jacquie Easley McGee, Director of Medical and Community Services at Mercy One told us the special problems that COVID 19 has made apparent in minority communities.  For our second story Paul Wierson and I took a road trip to the 

Story City Greater Chamber Connection Office where the new director, Shannon McKinley told us how the traditional Scandinavian Days Celebration is being adapted to the Pandemic.  Finally, before people venture out on the rivers for safely distanced activities, Todd Robertson, Outreach Coordinator/Canoe and Kayak and SUP Instructor at Iowa Department of Natural Resources, joined us to provide safety tips.

Dr. Molly Lee, Associate Director of the Center for Food Security & Public Health at the Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine provided the latest updates on SARSCoV-2(Covid-19) and information on vaccine availability and distribution

Dr. William (Billy) Beck, Iowa State University Assistant Professor, and Extension Forestry Specialist provided information on a study to determine how the beaver’s (Castor canadensis)  activity affect the quality of water and what role it might in nutrient reduction in our water sheds.
