President's Speech on Syria Broadcast On KHOI

KHOI interrupted their regularly scheduled programming tonight to bring you President Obama’s address to the nation on the Syrian crisis. The speech was carried live. There was be commentary and analysis until 9 p.m. The president’s speech culminated a weeklong media blitz urging military action against Syria for its use of poison gas in its civil war.

KHOI Celebrates Its First Year On the Air

KHOI Community Radio invites the public to celebrate its first year of radio broadcasting on Saturday, September 7th. Celebrations will occur in two consecutive events in downtown Ames, including a party at the station's headquarters with cake and performers, followed by a free concert at Cafe Diem. KHOI actually dates its birth to August 17, when it officially commenced regular broadcasting. Anniversary celebrations were postponed until September 7th to accommodate vacation times.

The September 7th celebrations will begin at 5:00 PM at KHOI's headquarters at 410 Douglas Avenue (the Ames Pantorium building).  Refreshments will be served, including a birthday cake provided by KHOI and HyVee. Myra Henderson, from Boone, will give a live musical performance, along with surprise guests. 

Celebrations will continue at Cafe Diem at 229 Main Street in Ames from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM with a live performance by Tom and Doug, along with musicians Joe Bezek, Will Stone, Knitmaster SSK, Dot-Com Girl, and others. Tom and Doug are the stars of “The Tom and Doug Show” a music and comedy show that airs weekly on KHOI at 11:30 on Saturday mornings and also syndicates nationally.  They describe themselves as the “the second best jazz-rock-ragtime-blues-comedy-rap-polka bands among New Jersey/Iowa duos.” Thomas Florek is from Princeton, New Jersey and Doug Gentile is an Ames resident and professor of psychology at Iowa State University.

Gentile said, “There's always a lot of uproar when Tom and I actually get to see each other in the same place and we want to share the brouhaha. Everyone, come and party with us at Cafe Diem on the 7th! It's free. But we ask that you still bring your checkbook and be a part of KHOI's financial success in their second broadcast year.”

“We certainly want to spread the fun and excitement about what has been accomplished so far. And  we want to thank everyone who has made this first year possible. KHOI belongs to the Central Iowa community.” said KHOI station manager Ursula Ruedenberg.

KHOI Broadcasts Tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.

Wednesday, August 28, 2013 marked the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington, one of the largest political rallies in US history. Organized by a group of civil rights, labor, and religious organizations, the March was where Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his a "I Have a Dream" speech. From 1:30 to 2:30 pm on August 28, KHOI broadcast an hour-long audio collage of King and the events that shaped his life and death, produced by Dred-Scott Keyes of WBAI-Pacifica. LIVE ON-AIR PLEDGE DRIVE SET FOR JUNE 28

KHOI Donate a Vehicle Program

KHOI wants your old vehicles!  Car, tractor, atv, recreational vehicle - if it's got an engine, running or not - donate it to KHOI and receive a tax deduction along with the continuation and further development of programs you want to hear on 89.1 FM. 

How does it work?  Just call the station at 515-292-2878 and we'll get the process started.  We send a tow truck out to your location - you don't have to do a thing, except make the call and sign over the title to the vehicle. 

DICK BROOKS TRAINS KHOI REPORTERS

Dick Brooks has over 35 years of experience in public and commercial radio. He has worked asa reporter, producer and manager for print media and public radio. Brooks has numerous national and international broadcast awards and fellowships and served as a consultant to the Corporationfor Public Broadcasting. He is very active in providing station-based training for community radio broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada.

His most recent work with ActionMedia, the company he founded in 1994, has involved hundredsof interviews and focus group projects that have led to new understandings of how people hearideas in relation to their own ideas rather than as an analysis of facts. These ideas are vital to betterinterviewing and better writing for successful communication.

KHOI Pledge Drive a Success

KHOI Community Radio thanks all of the individuals and local businesses that helped make the station’s first-ever on-air pledge drive a success. 

Nearing the Goal

The inaugural pledge drive took place on Friday, February 15.  Spurred on by an anonymous $25,000 donation received earlier in the week, volunteers took to the airwaves and raised an additional $3,000 during the daylong pledge drive.
