Local Talk will air Candidates with Cal, a series where Cal Halliburton speaks with gubernatorial candidates. He spoke with Democratic candidate John Harris about his candidacy and the upcoming primary election on June 5th.

Two Iowa State students of Ethiopian origin spoke with Sequan Gatlin about the culture they were raised with in comparison to their experience in America as well as what makes their country a unique African country. 

Dennis Hart provided us with an update on the local news from the pages of the Ames Tribune. 

Sustainability Director, Merry Rankin, spoke with Tracy Warner and Jake Moore about water in Story County. Warner and Moore are employed for the City of Ames. Information about the Smart Watersheds and rebate program can be found here.

We started our show with Cathy Glasson's interview with Cal Haliburton's "Candidates with Cal."  Then we turned to Alex Fejfar's discussion of the rise and fall of Younkers in Ames and the North Grand Mall.   Marg Junken, longtime owner of Cooke’s Emporium, described the changes in shopping patterns she has witnessed over the decades while Main Street was recovering. Our next guest, Cindy Hicks, director of the Main Street Cultural District, picked up the story of the turnaround in Main Street.  Ursula Rudedenberg concluded with an interview with Kirsten Anderson.

We began a series of interviews of gubernatorial candidates that will be airing over the next two weeks. In this first installment, Cal Haliburton interviewed State Representative Nate Boulton, a candidate in the upcoming Democratic Primary. Bronwyn Beatty-Hansen, from Ames City Council, was here for her monthly segment, and she talked about recent ordnances that were passed, including the rental concentration cap. In the last part of the show, we heard about the Democratic Candidate Forum for the 4th Congressional District that was held at ISU on April 26th. That is the seat that Representative Steven King currently holds.

Iowa Fetal Heartbeat Abortion Law

Last Tuesday the Iowa House of Representatives approved a measure banning nearly all abortions in Iowa, that requires doctors to conduct abdominal ultrasounds to test for a fetal heartbeat on women seeking abortions and which bans most abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected. The Senate approved the bill Wednesday morning and Reynolds is generally expected to sign it into law, beginning a  struggle that some anti-abortion advocates hope will result in the reversal of Roe V. Wade, the Supreme Curt ruling that upholds women's right to abortion under the 14th amendment. Mark Kende, Director of Drake University's  Constitutional Law Center, explains how this would happen. 

Thomas More Society is is one of a number of national organizations who have come forward to support the Fetal Heartbeat Bill in court.  Martin Cannon, Thomas More Society's Special Counsel, explains why they are and why they are doing this.  

Planned Parenthood and The American CivilLiberties Union of Iowa are two organizations generally expected to be challengers of the law. Veronika Fowler, Commmunications Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa describes how and why they will fight the bill if signed into law.

Susan Gwiasda gives an Ames civic update. Dennis Hart gives a round-up of local news from the pages of the Ames Tribune and related local papers.

Our program today continues the story of the Decorah Eagles, with Nature Reporter Pat Schlarabaum speaking with John Howe, director of the Raptor Research Project, about today’s memorial service for "Decorah Dad," the missing male eagle from the Eagle Webcam nest that has been viewed 400 million times over the past ten years. Then we celebrated spring with a road trip in rural Boone County to talk with Nicole Jonas, owner of Red Granite Farm.  Afterwards we had lunch at Whatcha’ Smokin’ , where owner Tanya Doyle told us the story of how she brought Texas Barbecue to Luther.  On a historical note, Boone City Councilman Greg Piklapp called to let us know about the Centennial Celebration for the Boone CountyCourthouse, which will be held on Friday, May 4. We wrapped up with Evan Burgur giving us some background for the Iowa Democratic Socialists of America Summit on Saturday May 5.

Weiss Music Collection and Jazz Party

John Basart (host of KHOI's "Hot Jazz Review") was co-host of our tribute to Harry Weiss in honor of the Weiss family's donation of his extensive collection of CDs and records to KHOI.  In so doing, the Weiss family brough ensured that Harry's lifelong love of jazz music and passion for bringing that music, and an appreciation and understanding of jazz music, to the larger Iowa community. His son David Weiss described his father's musical enthusiasm. 

For at least 14 years, Harry and Marion Weiss and their good friends Don and Donna Newbrough sponsored a jazz party in Ames. Each year they brought in top-flight musicians and hosted the event at the Gateway Center Hotel, with 250-300 jazz fans from around the state attending each event. Donna Newbrough describe how these events began and how the Weisses and the Newbroughs collaborated to invite "the best of the best" musicians and make them feel at home in Ames.

Co-hosts, Gale Seiler and Pat Schlarbaum, discussed the Dekorah eagles and what viewers of the web cam have been watching. On Friday, several hundred Ames High School students staged a walkout to call for changes to prevent gun violence and school shootings. We heard the voices of several of the speakers at the afternoon protest at Brookside Park. Allyson Walter, from the Ames Convention & Visitors Bureau, provided an update on upcoming events around the area.
