2021 BEST DEVELOPMENT AWARD RECIPIENTS  Celebrates iowa’s Development Heros and recognizes smart growth principles across Iowa. We review and discuss a number of the 7 awardee projects.

Erica Place, Outreach Coordinator for StoryvCounty Conservation joins us for our monthly visit.  We discuss planned activities for the month of January in and around Story Counties conservation properties. Also talk about the counties latest public conservation property and  highlight a public survey offered to help guide the conservation staff in their planning efforts. 

Susan Gwiasda Public Information Officer for the City of Ames: updates on city council meeting and remindes community of Christmas tree disposal hours. Susan introduces us to

Public Arts Commission (PAC) member Angie DeWaard who represents City volunteers kicking off outreach efforts for City Boards and Commissions recruitment.  Ames residents are encouraged to apply to be appointed to a City Board or Commission. Angie discusses how and why she got involved, what her Commission does, and how others can get involved.

Local Talk for Friday, January 7, 2022 included the news summary from Ames Tribune by Dennis Hart.  The proposed CO2 Pipeline was discussed by Mahmud Fitil from Iowa City.  More information  at greatplainsaction.org.  Susan Gwiasda, Public Relations Officer with City of Ames included Ames Electric Services, Chase Wrenn concerning how to report an electric outage by texting.  The number is 515-239-5240.  Citizens are advised to go to website CityofAmes.org and ensure your address is included in the OMS Outage Management System.  ISU Extension included Amber Wengert today.  Amber had upcoming workshops to announce from their website ISUextension@iastate.edu/Story.  Their address is 1421 S. Bell Ave. Ames, IA. Planting Design will meet Jan. 11 and 18 from 6PM - 7PM.  Family Values workshop will convene Jan. 31 for six weeks.  Music was by Bob Dylan, Winterlude; Donovan, Catch the Wind; Chad Eliott, Same, Old Way.

Reunion, Volunteer Fire Departments, Rural Revival

Paul Wierson was a guest this morning telling about his response to the full page ad in the Story City Herald taken out by members of  the Valley West YMCA youth group he advised from 1969-1974.  This was also the occasion for a virtual reunion when members of that group Jeff Borns, Randy Cox, Dom Ferentz, and Jeff Connor ZOOMed in to the KHOI studio.  Dan Ostrem, Stratford Fire Chief, told us about the heroic work of volunteer fire departments, from literally bringing water to rural fires to providing emergency health services and supporting community events  to purchase equipment (including fire trucks and ambulances.)  We ended the program with Sarah Thompson discussing "Rural Revival," her consulting firm to inspire economic development in small towns.

Dr. Molly Lee, Story County Board of Health; discusses current COVID-19 updates, status of influenza virus, Highlights Radon Awareness Month, what Radon is and why the concern, and introduces the current Story County Board of Health members and introduces two new members joining the board. Listen to a recording of some information about the James Webb Space telescope the successful Christmas day launch followed by  KHOI’s Sam Wormley as he discusses its current location, timeline and progress.  Susan Gwiasda Public Information Officer for the City of Ames shares updates on future meetings and events including natural Christmas tree disposal site hours, the MLKing observance and presentation of the Ames Humanitarian Award.
Civil Engineer Dean Sayre. reviews some recently finished street reconstruction projects in Ames and some large street projects he is working on this spring and discusses how streets are evaluated for reconstruction and what considerations go into new street designs.

Local Talk for Friday, December 31, 2021 featured Dennis Hart's summary of the news from the past week from the Ames Tribune. Local Ames musicians were highlighted during the hour on a special New Year's Eve Local Talk.  Reggie Greenlaw contributed selections, Bring a Torch Jeanette Isabella and Sun Dog Waltz from his Yuletide Joy cd.  Rosemary Griffin's cd Cowboys and Angel's was enjoyed also. Trickster, Learn How to Fly, Mired in Maya, and Come Love to Me.  Eric Timmons contributed two selections Coure de Lene and Little Bear.  An encore selection of Greensleaves by Reggie Greenlaw closed out the hour of local music for Local Talk. Have a Happy New Year everyone.
