Senator Bernie Sanders spoke at the ISU Student Union to support candidate JD Scholten for the US House and candidate for Iowa Secretary of State, Deidre DeJear. Excerpts from his speech are heard on this Local Talk.

Governor Kim Reynolds held a rally at Nelson Electric in Ames, together with other Republicans such as Iowa Secretary of State Mike Naig and Lt. Governor Adam Gregg. Reynolds' speech is heard on this Local Talk.

Carolyn Klaus from the Ames League of Women Voters talks discusses the ins and outs of voting, while Taylor Blair, president of ISU college Democrats, discusses student registration and voting. They are hosted by Carolyn Myers from Ames Progressive Alliance.

Today's program was a condensation of the League of Women Voters forum held on October 15, 2018, at Story County Extension in Nevada for Candidates for the Story County Board of Supervisors. These are Rick Sanders, Republican incumbent; Marty Chitty, Republican incumbent; Linda Murken, Democrat; Joshua Opperman, Democrat. The program ended with a new feature, "The Wild Ones," as Ursula Ruedenberg reflected on squirrels as companion animals followed by Pat Schlarbaum telling us about squirrel nests.

Today’s show was all about Autumn. Host, Gale Seiler, spoke with Sebastian Braun, the Director of the American Indian Studies Program at ISU, about the inaccurate narratives that persist about Native Americans and colonization, particularly in relation to Fall holidays like Thanksgiving and Columbus Day. Pat Schlarbaum provided a phenology on Dark-eyed Juncos, which are migrating through our area at this time of year, and Crystal Davis, from the Ames Convention and Visitors Bureau, filled us in on seasonal events happening around Ames over the next month.

On Monday, October 15, around 75 students from Iowa State, Grinnell, and Des Moines Area Community College held a demonstration and blocked traffic in front of the future site for a building to be called the Student Innovation Center off of Bissell Road. The demonstration was part of a nationwide day of action led by student groups: Student Action and Young Democratic Socialists of America. Javier Miranda, with a local chapter of Student Action, explains the issues about which students were demonstrating, including tuition hikes and privatization of the state public university system.

Eugenia Hartsook, Executive Director of Iowa State Extension and Outreach explains what the County Agricultural Extension Council is and who runs for the positions on that council. Voting ballots for the upcoming election in November  include a list of candidates.

The annual Iowa State Homecoming Parade will take place on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. on Main Street in Ames. The parade was only recently brought back by the ISU student alumni leadership council in 2016, featuring Iowa State representatives and dignitaries; 34 student organizations showcasing decorated floats, live animals, and music and dance presentations; and many local businesses and organizations from the Ames area, including the American Legion Post #37, which is celebrating its centennial in 2018. Casey Vance from the Ames History Center talks about the history of Homecoming. She also describes the History Center’s current exhibition on local sports teams in several locations; the history Center at 416 Douglas Ave in Ames will be open during and after the Homecoming parade, for visitors to enjoy the exhibit.   and an upcoming lecture: ISU Homecoming: A Historic Start to Save the Girls at Design on Main at 203 Main Street in Ames.

We started our program with Leanne Harter's report from Story County followed by a discussion of the events of the Borlaug Lecture held earlier this week featuring posters on students' field work before the 2018 World Food Prize Laureates spoke.  Because theLaureates, Lawrence Haddad and David Nabarro, were being honored for their individual and complementary global leadership in elevating maternal and child undernutrition to a central issue within the food security and development dialogue at national and international levels, our guest Cornelia Flora (Distinguished Professor of Sociology Emeritus) spoke about the importance of shifting the focus of agricultural research from producing as much food as possible to working with people to provide nourishing food--a much more complicated task.  Our second guest, Dave Fox, founder of FOX Engineering, an environmental engineering firm based in Ames, described a water and wastewater project in a Tanzanian village combining the skills and funding from the Ames Rotary Club with support from the International Rotary Foundation.  That project is described in this video.

Opening speeches are heard from candidates running for open seats for Iowa House districts 45, 46, and 48.  The forum was held at the Nevada Public Library, hosted by The Leagueof Women Voters for Ames and Story County. Iowa House districts 45, 46, and 48 cover the towns of Ames, Kelly, Gilbert, Slater and Sheldahl and the townships of Grant, Washington, Milford, Franklin, Lafayette, and northern Story County. 

Pat Schlarbaum brings a report on the Eastern Tiger Salamanders who are currently migrating in Iowa.

Brenda Dryer, who works with Ames Economic Development and is  Director of Workforce Solutions, Discusses the job market in Story County and development projects. She announces that Ames has been identified as the nation’s best job market by CNBC, and also that an Iowa Works office has moved to Ames. This is a support center for people looking for work, including coaching for job interviews and office facilities for public use. The office is located at 912 Lincoln way across from the Highway Commission building. Dryer also reminded job-seekers that jobs are posted at their web site, Work in Ames.
