Today's Local Talk featured Dennis Hart news and Merry Rankin Sustainability Coordinator with City of Ames and Iowa State University.  Merry discussed sustainability concerning the Smart Business Challenge.  Merry invited Robin Boskim to provide background from the Iowa Economic Development stand point.  Also Edgar Guillen, ISU student intern, provided his work in facilitating the Smart Business Challenge with KHOI Community Radio.  It was concluded that any efforts to diminish our carbon footprint as it were, is worth every penny in a Smart Business Challenge.  Anna Banana provided a delightful Carol Pluckrose selection of poetry.

Following Leanne Harter's Story County Reportwe heard from Wayne Friedrichs, from the American Soybean Association telling us how he discovered farming practices that not only enhances his ability to farm in difficult weather conditions, greatly improved his bottom line, and dramatically improved soil health.  Poet Jennifer Knox re-introduced us to her crowdsourced "Bird of Mouth," and read from her new book, Crushing It. Finally, we covered the first two days of the trial of Andrea Sahouri, the Des Moines Register Reporter who was arrested for covering a Black Lives Matter protest in Des Moines on June 20, 2020.

Sam Wormley Olli (Oshier Lifelong Learning Institute) Broad member and instructor,  Discusses the spring session course offerings available via zoom at Iowa State University.    

Susan Qwiasda, City of Ames Public Relations Officer Reviews upcoming meeting and provided information on how to keep up-to-date on projects within the city.

Dean Sayre, Ames Public Works Provided project updates relating to our roadways and residential street projects. Discussed the planning and preparation that occurs before a project begins including residential interaction traffic control, worker safety, re-route planning.

On the Road Again?..Open Atlas Travel, and Weather Awareness Week

Sarah Wiley, owner of Open Atlas Travel, a tourism business she launched despite the pandemic, talks about tourism during and post COVID. She addresses our stir-crazy desires to "seize the day" with our travel dreams and explains "deep travel," her method of preparing tourists for intimate experiences of foreign cultures they visit.  

March includes Weather Awareness Week, March 22-26. Disasters are part of Spring and warm weather in Iowa. Keith Morgan, Story County Emergency Management Coordinator, describes, in detail, how to prepare an emergency kit and what to do in a weather emergency. Do you have an emergency kit ready? A checklist can be found here.

Morgan also describes Iowa Bill HF 680, supported by the Iowa Emergency Management Association to provide a two-day sales tax holiday for preparedness items. Proposed dates are from midnight on the first Friday of August to midnight on the following Saturday.

Susan Gwiasda invited Kayley Barrios Lane to talk about energy efficiency in Ames.  Music was by Barbara Keith, The Bramble and the Rose.
