Dr Molly Lee reports for the Story County Board of Health with an update on the COVID-19 pandemic in our area, including the current Status Story County mask mandate, Vaccine status/distribution efforts, and which groups are to receive their first inoculation, as well as the efficacy of immune system after first and second doses. Ms. Lee is Associate Director of the Center for Food Security & Public Health at the Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

Pat Schlarbaum, KHOI environmental reporter, explains Ground Hog Day and the ground hog.

Erica Place, Outreach Coordinator with Story County Conservation briefly reviews some of the upcoming events in the County Conservation System and how Naturalists are interacting with the public with school classes. She tells us how to apply for the annual photograph contest.

Susan Gwiasda, Ames Public Relations Officer and Craig Kaufman, City Auditorium report from the City of Ames. Gwiasda reviews upcoming meetings including departs' budget meetings and what volunteers are needed for board positions. Kaufman reviewed past performances, feed back received, and futute performances.

45th Anniversary of ACCESS, Assault Care Center Extending Shelter and Support

Dennis Hart gives a summary of Iowa news of the past week.

ACCESS, the Assault Care Center Extending Shelter and Support, which was founded in February 45 years ago, is celebrating their 45th anniversary with a project they call Accessing Our History, a concerted effort to document the history of the organization. The project is being produced in partnership with KHOI, where oral history from people who have built and developed the support center for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence.

Tess Cody, the Executive Director of ACCESS and Courtney Palmersheim, Development Coordinator and Producer for the AccessingOur History project describe this project and play clips of some comments made by advocates who have worked at ACCESS, speaking about what they learned about this work.

This is the first in a three-part series of Local Talk special programs celebrating ACCESS’ history. The next two installments will be on February 8 and 15 on Monday Local Talk shows at 7 AM on KHOI.

Our news from the Iowa Legislature began with Betty Andrews, president of the Iowa Nebraska NAACP (National Association of the Advancement of Colored People), discussing the effects of proposed legislation from the perspective of people of color. KHOI's legislative reporter Laura Belin continued this discussion to the Amendments on Abortion and Gun Laws. Responding to the difficulty of attending Legislative hearings or lobbying in person during COVID, we played recordings of virtual lobbying by ICCI (Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement Action) with Adam Mason and the ICCI Action virtual Lobby Day.

Local Talk for January 22, 2021 featured Stephanie Shepherd from the Wildlife Diversity Program with the Department of Natural Resources. Steph talked about Monarch butterflies and Rusty Patched Bumblebees. Susan Gwiasda included Ron Edwards Animal Shelter Supervisor. We learned about pet care for the winter and the need for an improved facility. Anna Banana featured a poem from Carol Puckrose. And there was a nice Heart to Heart about dandelions.

The upcoming schedule of Legislative Updates from the Ames League of Women Voters was confirmed and their virtual format explained by LWV President Linda Hagedorn. The dates for the Legislative Wakeups are January 23, February 6, March 6, and April 10. Selections from the forums will be re-broadcast on Local Talk a week or so after the events. Next was a selection from a LWVprogram titled “Government, the Economy, and Human Welfare—an Historical Perspective” by Prof. Joshua Rosenbloom of the ISU Economics Department. We concluded the show with a preview of the Ankeny Community Theatre virtual production of The Book of Will, a dramatization of compiling Shakespear's First Folio of his complete plays.
