Leanne Harter was with us again with the Story County Report.  What started as a non-controversial program about what steps schools in our area are taking to re-open this fall, turned into a discussion of the question marks raised by Gov. Reynolds' July 17 proclamation outlining the state Board of Education's directives-- which conflict with virtually all the plans the school districts have spent months developing.  After that the show went to the birds when Jay Wilson from the Story City Greater Chamber Connection telling us about National Carousel Day century celebrated in Story City on their century old carousel, where their animals include a rooster.  Other important birds in Story City are the rubber duckies that usually have a great race floating down the skunk river (to keep away the crowds in the era of COVID-19, they were only memories this year).  Keeping with that theme Pat Scholarbaum brought us a phenology on hummingbirds to close out our show.

Our program today started with Steve Johnson, Farm Management Specialist with ISU Extension, giving us a brief overview of the complex government programs and issues that today's farmers need to navigate to make decisions.  Our discussion centered around disturbing recently published research indicating how disproportionately large farmers were benefiting and small farmers were suffering from current prices and supports.  As our discussion compared the present to the  Farm Crisis of the '80s,  historian Pamela Riney-Kehrberg told us about her research into that time .  Turning to collective activism, Ava Auen-Ryan announced a series of community conversations taking place throughout the state

Dennis Hart and Paul Wierson discussed another issue that became a major story only in the age of Covid 19 -- Meat packing plants and alternatives.

We started our program with a visit from Eric Morse, one of the organizers of the exhibition "Toward a Universal Suffrage: African American Women in Iowa and the Vote for All," which will be at the State Historical Society until August 2. Eric also told us about the Central Iowa Community Museum,  a new organization which will be bringing such traveling exhibitions to our area.  Other events taking place this weekend are Ankeny Community Theatre's reader's theatre production of Vices and Slater Area Historical Association's The History of Hats (call 515-480-9789 or 515-228-3293 for appointment).  Dennis Hart and Paul Wierson joined us for a report on how COVID 19 has affected their lives since they were together on Local Talk in October..
