Sauerkraut Munster Tart

Pastry:

  • 3 ½ cups flour
  • 4 oz. cold milk
  • 1½ sticks butter
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 egg yolks

Make ahead so dough can chill. Mix all ingredients, knead gently, wrap in plastic wrap, chill at least 3 hours or overnight. This is a very rich crust.

Following the monthly Story County Report by Leanne Harter, we spoke with Brad Taylor, the teacher of Roland Story Agricultural Education, (which sponsors the student organization FFA- Future Farmers of America) a program which has steadily increased in size and community service even as the number of farms decreased.  Our next guests were Luke Gran, Amy Zabrodsky, and Peter Englund from Prudenterra, an organization dedicated to restoring Iowa's ecosystems.  They just finished an amazing day with a class of first-graders of Nevada Central Elementary.  Finally we visited Joanie Jamison, library director at the Colo Public Library. She gave is an account of how the library has creatively adapted to the changes in technology and library usage, and how it augments services of the Colo Nesco Schools.  

Veterans Day, Climate Action, Winter Safety

The show started with weekly Iowa news from Dennis Hart. Then we remembered Veterans Day with a conversation about PTSD and other challenges that veterans face. Ursula Reudenberg spoke with Barnet Devine, a counseling psychologist who works with veterans; Keith Putney, a lawyer and farm owner in Boone who is also a veteran of the Viet Nam War; and Tyler Paterson, the suicide prevention officer with the Veterans Administration in Iowa. The photo is of the Veterans Day Parade in Ames in 1949.

Pat Schlarbaum provided an update on climate action from Carolyn Raffesberger. Keith Morgan, from Story County Emergency Management, spoke about safety during the winter season, both in your car and at home. And of course, it is KHOI’s Fall membership drive, so we asked you to become a member!

After Dennis Hart's weekly news, we heard a conversation between Ursula Ruedenberg and Nicholas Johnson, giving you an introduction to this colorful advocate for independent media, especially local media.  We hope you'll want to meet him in person to hear "Media Under Siege" on Friday, November 16.  Merry Rankin,  Molly Breen, Madeleine Blandin, and Cindy Hicks came into the studio to tell us about this weekend's Main Street Events -- On Friday, Snow Magic opening the holiday shopping season in downtown Ames, and on Saturday a "buying green" event with a series of welcoming offers for SustAmes to entice ISU students to shop sustainably by supporting the shops on Main Street.  Joy B and I closed with a visit to Evert's Flower shop to enjoy the spectacular decorated trees and to renew the offer of the flower card (see announcement in the right-hand column).

After a brief announcement of election returns, we hear Ursula Ruedenberg's interview with the last three voters in Story County, who voted at Buchanan Hall shortly before midnight.  These first time women voters  stood in line for over two hours hours after the polls closed at 9 p.m., and  gave inspiring statements about what it meant to them.  Then Suzanne Zilber, a clinical psychologist who has been serving Iowans for 28 years,came to the studio to tell us about a workshop that will take place this Saturday, November 10, “Post Kavanaugh: Women Sharing Support.”  Returning to politics, we heard from Patti Naylor, Democratic Candidate for Greene County Supervisor, who ran to publicize issues that go far beyond Greene County -- siting of CAFOs and wind turbines.  Finally Maggie Westvold's Points to Ponder was a brief history of migrant farm labor with a personal fond memory of "Boomer," the itinerant laborer who came to her family's farm near Colo to help with the harvest each year when she was a child.

After the Iowa news roundup from Dennis Hart, host Gale Seiler spoke with Cheryl Binzen from Inclusive Ames. They discussed an upcoming event called Race: The Power of an Illusion, which is co-sponsored with the Ames Human Relations Commission and the Ames Public Library. KHOI reporter Joy Beadleston brought us an interview with ISU students who are part of NextGen America and are working to get out the youth vote. Ames City Council member Bronwyn Beatty-Hansen was with us to talk about the City’s efforts to address climate change and the inclusion of that topic in future planning.

Excerpts from some speeches made by a variety of clergy from many denominations, during a memorial ceremony and vigil at the Tifereth Israel Synagogue in Des Moines last week, in response to the killing of 11 Jews at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh.
 
A report on the "Stand up and Vote Out" rally hosted by the National School Walkout Day at ISU; Iowa State University's gathering at the free speech zone,where students rallied on Wednesday. ISU College Democrats and Republicans rallied about 4th District US Representative, Steve King around his perceived association with hate groups. 
 
Ames Jewish Congregation President, John Pleasants who published a Letter To The Editor in the Des Moines Register together with a representative of the Mason City Synagogue, speaks about their decision to do so. Barbara Pleasants from the Ames Jewish Congregation explained how diverse people and denominations came together in Ames to submit a statement in the Ames Tribuneand Iowa State Daily. Both John and Barbara spoke about the controversy around  Steve King;'s history of association with hate groups.
 
Story County, auditor Lucy Martin, described preparations for the upcoming midterm elections, updating us on foreseeable problems or mistakes to avoid, voting locations,hours and how to prepare for the count down to election day. 
 
Transportation businesses offering free or reduced rides the night of the election include: Ames Hirta Transportation 1-877-686-0029 call by 11/5 before 4PM to set-up a ride for election day in Ames or Boone. Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and Des Moines are all offering free election day bus transit rides. Ames Cyride will not have special fares on election day. Also and Sam Ames Shuttle LLC will offer shuttle discounted rides for $5.00 in the Ames area to get to the polls on election day from 7AM-5:30 PM please call to schedule a ride. Tel. Ames Public Relations Officer Susan Gwiasda gave an update us on Ames community civic activities including the proper pumpkin and leaf disposal etiquette. A November Cyride meeting at the Ames Public Library on November 13 at 6:00 PM in the PEO room to hear community ideas and feedback on the new 2.0 Cyride program.
