Dennis Hart gives a summary of Iowa stories in the news from the past week.

Morgan Fritz, Iowa State University student government president, discusses students' range of adjustments, hardships, and optimism, this semester. Morgan supports the return to campus and  of in-person classes at ISU. She has also asked Governor Reynolds, on behalf of the Student Body Government, for support for mask ordinances by local municipalities like Ames.

Alexa Rodriguez, Iowa State University student and member of Iowa Student Action, articulates the message that in-person classes are endangering lives that was delivered during a "Sickout" on September 15. The protest was organized by  Iowa Student Action, Black Lives Matter in Ames, and UIowa Sickout. Alexa also describes her own coronavirus infection and the dangers she and others face.

Anna Banana delivers heart to heart messages about facing difficult circumstances.

Local Talk continued its focus on voting with Carolyn Klaus of the Ames League of Women Voters altering us to changed laws for casting ballots, early voting, mail-in ballots, or in county drop boxes.  For more details check the Iowa Secretary of State's website https://sos.iowa.gov/ Joe Enriquez Henry,  of LULAC, League of United LatinAmerican Citizens, came on to reveal the importance of Latinos in Iowa, economically as well as potential voters.  Our next stop was a visit with Gina Perkins at Cultivating Hope Farm, a new non-profit in Story County based on the model of Care Farms in other states. Charissa Hamel director of the internationally acclaimed dark comedy, Gods of Carnage, a production of Ankeny Community Theatre's Readers Virtual Theatre came in to tell us to tell us how we can get tickets online.

Dennis Hart gives a summary of Iowa stories in the news of  the past week

First in Local Talk’s series: Introducing the Candidates, Susan Herzog, independent candidate for US Senate, speaks about her approach to health care and how she believes that an independent Senator from Iowa could help get issues addressed more effectively and give Iowa more leverage in Washington

Mike Kellner, Prairie Rivers of Iowa PR and Marketing Coordinator describes how Iowa nonprofit Prairie Rivers of Iowa will present a Wild & Scenic virtual Film Festival of ten films focusing on conservation and the environment. This will be a virtual film festival, available via livestream. Friday, October 2, from 7:30 to 9 p.m.  It will be followed up with additional streaming available through Saturday, October 7. Go here to purchase a ticket.

Everyone who purchases tickets for the film festival will be invited to a private webinar with our pollinator expert, David Stein. David will host in early November a presentation about planting a prairie, choosing the “right” seed for pollinators, and caring for a prairie over time. All participants will be able to chat and ask David questions that are on their minds.

Stephens Auditorium, has joined 60+ other cultural institutions around the country in participating in a nationwide watch party of “John Lewis: Good Trouble,” a recently released documentary that examines the life and accomplishments of the Georgia congressman and civil rights leader who died of cancer July 20. Released this summer, the documentary features archival photographs, rare video and candid conversations with Lewis and fellow politicians and activists. It tracks the Alabama native’s rise in the civil rights movement and his long career in Congress, where he introduced the bill creating the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Leanne Harter led off with her monthly Story County Report, focusing on Veteran Suicide Prevention.  Updating Roland Story Returning to Learn, Superintendent Matt Patton described the safety education for students, parents and their communities.  In the second half of the program we had three different perspectives on Black Voter Day,  Rev. Rob Johnson is heading a voter tour to register voters led by No Justice No Peace in cities all over Iowa.  A leader of Black Lives Matter in Boone and ISU graduate student, A'ja Lyons, gave us her perspective on the importance of that movement in inspiring voters.  And finally, Betty Andrews, President of the Iowa Nebraska NAACP gave us a run-down of how and why we can tune in to the first VIRTUAL NAACP Convention.

NAMI Iowa, and The Arc of Story County will host an online Candidates Forum on Disability Issues: Wednesday, September 16 from 6:30 to 8 PM. You are invited to attend via Zoom, to register,go here. Limited space is available. Candidates running for office representing Story County residents will respond to questions concerning disability issues raised by the host agencies, Participating candidates will include: Theresa Greenfield, Zuzann Herzog, Rick Stewart, JD Scholten, Ciny Oppedal Paschen, Beth Wessel Kroeschell, Ross WIburn, Robert Bacon, Dave Deyoe, Latifah Faisal, Steve O'Rourke, and Lisa Heddens. 

Jamie Pollard, ISU Director of Athletics, penned a letter on September 4th to fans, recommending that Iowa State respond to a $30 million deficit with layoffs or payroll reductions, eliminating sports and closing C.Y. Stephens Auditorium. A few days later, he tweeted a follow-up statement.  According to Pollard, due to damages from COVID19, the university is having to choose between continuing to subsidize community access to performing arts events or eliminating services to students (i.e. dropping a sport) or laying off employees.  He said “Perhaps the City of Ames and City Council could step up and help fund the $1 M shortfall if keeping CY Stephens is important to the citizens of Ames.” Tammy Koolbeck, Executive Director of the Iowa State Center answers questions about how decisions will be made about CY Stephens, the financial issues, and who uses the entertainment venue.

Schools and Theaters: COVID Response

A short tour around our listening area showed a variety of innovations for bringing lively activities with social distancing as people gather in schools and theaters. Paul Wierson joined us with Paul Clark producer of the Norsemen Network broadcasting sports for fans in the Roland-Story School District.  Then we visited Erin Rovey, owner of the Boone Theater, which perseveres in their vision "to give our customers a big city cinema experience in a more personalized environment, all at a fair price."  Their website provides Boone Theater COVID-19 Measures. Next stop Nevada's Talent Factory with owner Larry Sloan describing how he is providing entertainment for the Nevada community, while developing a world class venue for live performers.  Our last stop was with the Ames Community Theatre performing Savannah Sipping Society in partnership with CY Stephens Auditorium. ACTORS president, Stan Rabe, described the double cast (two equal casts of four) each performing twice.  The cast members come in from Boone, Roland, and Collins.

Our show today started with news interviews with ISEA (Iowa State Education ) President, Mike Beranek describing the lawsuit against Gov, Reynold for her return to school order, speakers from the Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement virtual Convention "Rooted in Justice" who also have a lawsuit to protect clean water, and, finally Steve Sullivan,  director of marketing and community relations at Mary Greeley Medical Center, telling us the details of the new drive through Test Iowa Clinic for coronavirus at the ISU Industrial Park. Shifting to our very special Labor Day event the  "Last Waltz Concert" with the Barn Owl Band with musical guests-- the Barn Owl Band on Paul and Sherri  front porch at 604 Hodge from 5:00 - 8:00 PM on September 7

Musicians will gather once again on the front porch for the sounds of life and community - even if most of it must be virtual. We gather to honor Paul and Sherri, their house, and to lift our own spirits, reconnect and remember our hearts. And raise money for the station that Paul built to keep community on the air. The evening will be hosted by KHOI Board member and Paul's friend, Pat Schlarbaum.
