Leanne Harter gave the Story County Report including the reminder that property taxes are due.  Second. we had the Betty Andrews Community Report, telling people the multiple agencies where people can go to file and complaint, as well as were lawyers can find opportunities for training and involvement at iowanebraskanaacp.org   In honor of the beginning of Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month, we took a road trip to Nevada with its three Mexican owned restaurants.  We heard the stories from the owners of two -- Indy from MiaCasita, and Eddy from Snack Time--both of whom have operated on Main Street for decades, raised their children there, and shared their heritage with the citizens of  Nevada. Switching to the Harvest Arts Tour, Ellen Fairchild  described the open houses at artists studios at Art on the Prairie.  And finally, Jonathan Levi co director of Treasure Island tells us about all the pirates in the opening play of Boone Community Theatre's 2021-22 Season.

Dennis Hart gives a rundown of Iowa news from the past week. Anita Rollins has announced her candidacy for Ames City Council District 3. She describes the issues, and values she intends to focus on as a council member, with emphasis on open-mindedness, inclusiveness, and opportunity in the Ames community. She also describes her experience in public service and how they apply to being a council member. Keith Morgan, Story County Emergency Coordinator, gives a checklist for your emergency preparedness kit. He asks every household and business to prepare this, especially during September, "Preparedness Month."  Information   for  disaster preparedness - top link on left side.

A checklist for your preparedness kit:

  • Food and water:  Used to say for 72 hours, 1 gallon/day/person
  • NOAA weather radio with batteries or solar/hand crank
  • Flashlight
  • Batteries
  • Whistle
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags w plastic ties
  • Can opener
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape
  • Dust mask
  • Way to charge cell phone (solar/hand crank)
  • Pet supplies
  • Extra glasses/meds
  • First aid items (Pain reliever, bandages, anti-diarrhea meds, laxative, maybe tourniquet)
  • Tools to turn off water and gas
  • Cash or travelers check
  • Personal hygiene supplies
  • Matches in water proof container
  • Eating/cooking utensils
  • Games/puzzles for kids

Local Talk Friday, September 10 started off with news summary of the week from Ames Tribune by Dennis Hart.  Fred Love encouraged listeners to check Maximum Ames.org for the weekend.  Jeannie Hopper provided compelling documentary of 9 11 in New York City from 2001 when the World Trade Center Towers came down.  Music she encouraged listeners to hear Do It Now by Diatribe Sound.  Susan Gwiasda and Merry Rankin with the City of Ames encouraged people to contact Keith Abraham if they have upgrades or improvements to City Parks at kabraham@City.Ames.ia.us. Dana James, founder of Black Iowa News, gave us a report on low vaccination rates among Black Iowans (25%) as compared with White Iowans (46%) and her attempts to reach the unvaccinated.  We learned about the music group Masterplan playing at the music festival Shagstock near Boone this weekend from music reporter Greta Anderson.  Mike Kellner from Prairie Rivers described three films from the Wild and Scenic Film Festival taking place October 1.  Topping off the events this month, we heard from Loween Getter, director of "1001 Stories," a reader's theatre production of Webster City Community Theatre on September 10 and 11 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
