Jeff Kopaska, Fisheries Biometrician, IDNR Reviews the history of research on Ada Hayden Heritage Park, The unique properties of the water body here in central Iowa, the measures and practices taken to protect the water quality to insure an important fishery, its value to wildlife and our community for recreational, physical and emotional health, as well as providing  an emergency back-up freshwater source for the community .

Iowa National Summer Transportation Virtual Summer Camp, New Story County Weather Emergency Alert System for Cell Phones

Patricia Bahr, from the University of Iowa Center for Excellence in Development in  Disabilities announces the Iowa National Summer Transportation Institute, a virtual "summer camp" for students in 7th, 8th, and 9th grades interested in transportation. The camp, sponsored by the Department of Transportation's Civil Rights Bureau, is an interactive and engaging introduction to professions behind the different forms of mass transportation and provides information about career opportunities and training in skills and preparation for applying to college. The camp will feature professionals in different types of mass transportation and engineers who tutor in STEM skills. The camp will begin onJuly 21 and last two weeks, every weekday for two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon. The program is free of charge. Keith Morgan, Story County Emergency Management Coordinator, announces a recently upgraded mass notification system provided by Iowa Homeland Security to Story Co, available at no cost. -Individuals will be able to elect to receive Severe ThunderStorm watches/warnings, Tornado watches/warnings, Flood & Flash Flood watches and warning. The service allows you to self-identify medical conditions for emergency management and can identify the scale and scope of response requirements for special needs. One individual can register the entire family and manage the account if phone numbers change. To register, go here.

Diversity: Then and Now

Leanne Harter, Story County Director of Outreach brought us her monthly Story County Report with comments from Paul Wierson

Considering the controversy locally and in the Iowa Legislature over  "divisive concepts"  Reggie Greenlaw, retired Ames High School teacher and member of the Unity/Diversity planning committee in 1995, gave us a historical and musical perspective regarding how we have dealt with "divisive issues" in the past.  

KHOI political reporter Laura Belin, led us through the likely outcomes of the "Divisive Concepts Bill,"  (HF 802) just signed by Governor Reynolds on Tuesday evening.  

Doug Gentile invited our listeners to a community fundraiser for KHOI to be held by Tom (Florek) and Doug (Gentile) on Saturday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Dog Eared Books on Main Street.  As enticement he sang a couple of original songs, "Song to Save the World," and "Community Radio."

Artwalk, Kids Co'Motion Summer Registration now open, IRIS leadership for Iraqi Youth, Iowa's Exceptional Highway rest Areas

Cleora Stanley is the Des Moines artist hosted by KHOI during Art Walk - a celebration of coming back to public life in downtown Ames, last Thursday. Cleora tells us a little about herself and her impression of Ames.  

Valerie Williams, Executive Director of the local dance company, Co’Motion, and Design Intern Dani Steffes, announce that summer 2021 registration is now open for Kid’s Co’Motion. Kids Co’Motion is a three-week daily modern dance workshop for children from July 12 to 31, ending in a concert at the bandshell. The workshops train students aged 8-18 in dance technique, composition, artistic collaboration, and stagecraft. Dance experience is not required to participate. Information and weekly updates are at Facebook and Instagram (@kidscomotion)

Iowa’s Resource for International Service, or IRIS, is a non-profit, non-religious organization headquartered in Ames that works to promote international education, development, and peace through people-to-people exchange programs that develop and enhance citizen diplomacy. Del Christensen, Executive Director of IRIS, describes a current virtual hosting program underway between Iraqi families, which will culminate in leadership training in July, preparing Iraqi youth to lead volunteer projects in Iraq. IRIS is currently looking for businesses who are interested in sponsoring their 2021 Peace Day September 19th, a multi-cultural event and race that raises funds for IRIS while raising awareness of international human relations. Steven McMenamin, Iowa’s highway rest areas Administrator for the department of transportation, explains the vision, work, and politics behind Iowa’s exceptional rest areas. Special attractions that actually inspire rest area tourism, they are designed by artists to include historical exhibits integrated into the building and ground designs. An overview of the different themes and histories can be seen online.

Local Talk for Friday, June 4, 2021 included update of the news from the Ames Tribune by Dennis Hart.  Kofi Robinson from Hennepin County Minnesota provided his assessment of: How George Floyd's murder has changed our lives. Keith Abraham Ames Parks and Rec Director gave updates for Furnam Pool repairs and other Park Programs planned for this summer.  The hour was rounded out with a story from John Howe, Director of the Raptor Resource Project.  John provided an update on Peregrine Falcon banding at nest sites or eyries. Also, he explained death of two hatchlings at Great Spirit Bluff.
