Saturday, September 8th was a global day of action:  Rise For Climate, Jobs, and Justice. In Ames, concerned citizens organized a meeting to brainstorm local actions that can be taken to address the climate crisis. Erv Klaas, ISU Professor Emeritus in Animal Ecology Mary Richards, lawyer and former Story County Attorney,  reported on the meeting and ideas that were generated. There was a decision to form an advocacy group to work with local public representatives on the city and county levels, to address climate change, The newly formed group will meet on October 8 at 7 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 1015 N Hyland Ave. New participants are welcome to join in the meeting.  For information, contact Rev Klaas at ervklaas50010@yahoo.com or at 515-233-3327.

First Nations and Pufferbilly Days

The program started with Dennis Hart's summary of news from local papers followed by a report from Susan Franzen, who joined the First Nation-Farmer Climate Unity March on its stop in Ames on Day 3 of the 8-day march.  As the gear trucks arrived ahead of the marchers,  she was welcomed by one of the organizers, Sarah Spain, and "Veggie Thumper," the cook from the colorful food truck. Since the issues surrounding Eminent Domain and the upcoming landowners' lawsuit were well-covered on KHOI last week, she turned her attention to the significant First Nations presence in the march.  We heard from Donielle Wanatee, Foxy Jackson, Jimmie Tidwell, Christine Nobiss, and Lakasha, as well farmer-marcher Sarah Byrnes.  As they marched the fourteen miles from Ames to the Boone County Fairgrounds on Wednesday, Boone was preparing for it's biggest annual festival -- Pufferbilly Days.  Alyssa Knudsen, of the Boone Chamber of Commerce, was on hand to tell us about it.  The program ended with Points to Ponder by Maggie Westvold recalling her most influential teacher.

Ames residents Erwin Klaas and Mary Richards, who organize The Climate Circle, invite you to a local workshop being planned for the national day of action: Rise For Climate on September 8th. Local residents are invited to hear speakers and discuss how to bring about local actions that significantly addresses "climate emergency." The workshop/forum will be held on September 8 from 1-4 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 1015 Hyland Ave in Ames.

The national organization Climate Mobilization has been supporting local efforts; Nichol Harris Director of from Climate Mobilization speaks to us from New York City about how Ames' efforts connect with national initiatives.

New Local Talk reporter Tami Kuhn describes the rodeo in Nevada.

As monarchs currently gather to migrate to Mexico Stephanie Shepherd, from the Department of Natural Resources, explains the story of Monarchs and their heroic journey.

Hosts Dennis Hart and Ursula Ruedenberg kick off their new feature: "The Wild Ones" - stories of encounters with wild animals in daily life. We talked about deer and squirrels we know, but we want your stories. Send them to khoiradio@gmail and we'll read them on the air.

Joel Green, Mayor of Marshalltown, gives an update on that town's recovery efforts after the July 19th tornado that destroyed hundreds of structures.

Ed Fallon from Bold Iowa and Tesida Barfoot explain the “First Action-Farmer climate march,” a contingent of Iowans who are marching 95 miles through Central Iowa from Sept 1-8. The march will begin in Des Moines and will end in Fort Dodge to raise awareness of the upcoming September 12 hearing before the Iowa Supreme Court of a lawsuit claiming illegal use of eminent domain, from Iowa landowners where the Dakota Access Pipeline has been laid and the Iowa Sierra Club.

Mark Ganseo- City of Ames engineer, gives a road construction update for the Ames, including how construction will affect area drivers.

Maggie Westvolt delights us with a new “Points to Ponder” about: “Lutefisk and other Scandinavian desserts”.

Keith Puntenney, a Boone resident and landowner/manager of 600 acres of farm land in Boone and Webster Counties, describes the lawsuit he, numerous other landowners, and the Iowa Sierra Club have brought before the Iowa Supreme Court. Hearings begin September 12th. A group of Iowans are marching 95 miles from DesMoines to Marshalltown as the First Nation - Farmer Climate Unity March beginning September 1 - September 8. Actions are being taken globally on September 8 as part of "Rise for Climate" day on the 8th.

Seth Moore, Environmental Specialist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, describes the Rusty-patched Bumble Bee, a bumble bee native to Iowa, that has been put on the endangered species list.The bee has been found in some Iowa counties and the DNR is asking citizens to look for them and report sightings to them. Carolyn Myers from the Ames Progessive Alliance, looks into large community-based composting projects. Jennifer Jordan, the Resource Management superintendent for Iowa CIty describes a municipal composting program offered by the city, that takes residents' compost and also sells the resulting compost soil back to them. Tim Goode, with the Iowa State University Research and Demonstration Farms, describes the University Compost Facility, where Iowa State University composts all food waste on campus, along with manure from dairy cows.

The show started with Iowa news from Dennis Hart. Then host, Gale Seiler, shared a tribute to B.J. Furgurson and Aretha Franklin, two influential African American women who passed away last week.

Jacqueline Comito and Mark Licht joined us to tell about a new initiative at ISU called the Conservation Learning Group. This will be a think tank dedicated to addressing conservation and environmental challenges.

We also heard about an upcoming event, the Symposium on Building Inclusive Organizations, from Andrea Hammes Dodge from the Ames Chamber of Commerce and Vanessa Baker-Latimer, who is with the City of Ames. This half-day event on October 31, 2018 will provide practical strategies towards building more inclusive workplaces in Ames and Story County.
