Ayodeji Oluwalana , the new Recycling Coordinator for Iowa State University, talks about how he is bringing a global vision of environmentalism to ISU, based on his experience with environmental disaster in Nigeria. He describes the concept of up-cycling: using garbage as a building resource , demonstrated by a greenhouse he invented, made from plastic bottles.

Zoe Lee, 14-year-old owner of Sweetery-Z Catering, describes the three birthday cakes she will make for KHOI’s birthday party on August 12th. Zoe is a native of the Republic of Congo and was adopted by a family in the Ames after being ophaned and experiencing hunger in the Congo. Consequently, she sends a portion of her income to an orphanage in the Congo, to help alleviate hunger in her home country.

Ames at-large councilwoman Bronwyn Beatty-Hansen,  discusses current issues and initiatives on the Ames City Council with Reporter Dennis Hart. She breaks the news that Ames Mayor Hailahas vetoed the current rental cap ordinance adopted by the city council governing numbers of renter per building. The veto was responding to exceptions included in the ordinance.

Clayton Stevens, an Ames resident, takes time in between Oklahoma and Texas rodeos, to describe what its like to be a competitive bull rider. 

KHOI's interns provide Points to Ponder about financial circumstances for college athletes - should they be paid? Angela Solberg from ISU Architecture and Landscape Services explains road work on campus, particularly the entrance to Campus by Friley Hall at Lincoln Way and Welch.

Ames Public Relations Officer and City Engineer Mark Gansen give an update on city events, projects, and road improvements.

We started off the show with a roundup of regional news gathered by Dennis Hart which leads to an update of the tornado damage in Marshalltown. We heard an interview from Dennis and Paul Weirson with Marshalltown Mayor Greer. The interview included updates about the damage and trying to move forward.

Afterwards, there was a tribute to Howard Hammond, who passed away last week. Paul interviewed Louis, a close friend of Howard, about his life. After the interview, we heard an old recording of Paul and Howard from 2015.

Finally, Jackie Norman interviewed Scott Dockstader, the District 1 Engineer for Iowa. Scott explained the complications and delays with the I-30 flyover ramp and bridge, as well as the process of moving forward with the project.

Clint Miller, coordinator of Story County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES), describes the pivotal public safety that "ham radio" operators perform on Story County. On June 19th, Governor Kim Reynolds presented the Story County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) with the Governor’s Volunteer Service Award. This award is given out to recognize volunteer talents and to support Iowa’s nonprofits, charitable organizations, and government entities. 

Nick Schieffer, School Resource Officer for Ames gives information for parents on how to better protect your child from cyberbullies and cyber-predators. The i-SAFE foundation is a national organization that provides Internet safety information for parents to protect their children.. According to their statistics, over half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online, and about the same number have engaged in cyber bullying. More than 1 in 3 young people have experienced cyberthreats online and over 25 percent of adolescents and teens have been bullied repeatedly through their cell phones or the Internet. Well over half of young people do not tell their parents when cyber bullying occurs.
 

KHOI volunteer Greta Anderson gives the low-down on KHOI's upcoming birthday party to be held on August 12 from 4 - 7 PM in the parking lot behind KHOI and the Ames History Center. The Heath Allen Band from Des Moines will be performing very dance-able music. Please join US!

The show started with the roundup of Ames news from Dennis Hart. Then today’s host, Gale Seiler, interviewed Dr. David Grewell from the Department of Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering at ISU, where he is also Director of the Center for Bioplastics and Biocomposites (CB2). They spoke about the problems caused by plastics in the environment and efforts to use plant proteins to make biorenewable, biodegradable plastics. Dr. Grewell shared several interesting success stories from this line of development. He provided the photo of plastic washed up on a beach in Bali during a recent visit he made there. In the last part of the show, Anne Kinzel from the Ames Progressive Alliance spoke with Barb Wheelock about becoming a community activist during retirement.

On this July 25th edition of Local Talk, Dennis Hart opened the show with news from the Boone News Republican, the Nevada Journal, the Story City Herald and the Tri-County Times. 

Ursula Ruedenberg and Maggie Westvold interviewed RAGBRAI riders live from Brookside Park! Hear what the riders had to say about the event.

Greta Anderson had a great deal of information to share about the events of RAGBRAI including activities and vendors participating in the festivities. Many riders also shared their stories with Greta. 

Javier Miranda from the Ames Tenant Union spoke to hosts Dennis Hart and Paul Wierson about the Ames Rental Gap, a time where students may find themselves homeless for up to 2 weeks in transition to the next semester. Tim Kirchoff, also of the Tenant Union, joined the conversation by phone. 

At the end of the program, Iowa State lecturer Alisa Stoehr discussed human trafficking with our engineer, Jackie Norman.

On July 19th, Attorney General Tom Miller and officials from every state teamed up with the Federal Trade Commission to fight against fraudulent veteran corporations. Lynn Hicks called into the station on Friday to speak about their campaign, Operation: Donate with Honor. Learn more here.

Veterinary Summer Experience, CCI Convention, Ames History

Alejandro Ramirez and Jessica Juarez talked about a Food Animal Summer Experience designed to provide students of color with hands-on opportunities in Vet Science. Two undergraduate participants, J’Haira Rhodes and Daniela Gatica, spoke about how they became interested in Veterinary Medicine and what they have learned in the program.

The annual convention of Citizens for Community Improvement will take place on Saturday in Des Moines, and we heard from one of the speakers at that event. Kevin Simowitz, from Caring Across Generations, told about initiatives to build a better long-term health care system.

Alex Fejfar from the Ames Historical Society reminded us of the Ames High School Exhibit, which will be closing soon, and the new exhibit opening in August on Grain Elevators.
