As New Year's Eve 2022 approaches, we are reflecting on past shows as we announce some unusual events for this year.  We started with Paul Wierson's interview with 15 year old Hawk McIntire, singer songwriter from Boone on his debut appearance on KHOI in 2014.  Since then he has become nationally successful. Then Danielle Ziegler from Ames Public Library Youth Services announced the Noon Year's Eve Party from 11 AM to 12:30 PM. when families and children of all ages are invited to the library.  John Jerro of High Society Big Band announced that the Red Friar's New Year's Dance will be back at the Moose Lodge this year after a COVID induced hiatus for NYE 2021.  While we were still "in the mood," we were joined by Gina McAndrews who invited us to share her experience  variety of dance bands she has enjoyed there in the past twenty years at the legendary Lake Robbins Ballroom (lakerobbins.com) and where the 11 piece Gaylin Sudik Orchestra will be playing this year.   And to wrap up the evening we got a preview of an authentic ball drop at Ames' Mucky Duck Pub from the proprietor Marcus Johnson.

Feathered Friends Tuesday we visit with Dr. Tyler Harms about Iowa Youg Birders and Snowy Owls in Iowa. We spend some time with Stephanie and Todd Burras of Wildbirds Unlimited in Ames learning about winter bird feeding and the common woodpeckers at winter feeders.
 
 
KHOI’s Sam Wormley reviews the winter Iowa State university Oshier Life Long Learning courses and we visit with Carolyn Jons ISU Olli Instructor about a course being offered on Grandparents,Parents,andCaring Adults Help Children Read to Succeed.
 
Susan Gwiasda Public Information Officer for the City of Ames joins us to discuss the Ames climate action plan meeting update,  and we discuss various ways on how folks can reduce their CO2 footprint.

Local Talk for Christmas Eve December 24  2021. After Dennis Hart's news summary from the pages of the Ames Tribune, Local Talk turned to music from local musicians that filled the hour with their "Gifts to the Airwaves" this Holiday Season. Artists included Steve Veysey, Rosemary Griffin, Larry Stoltenberg of Redz Band, Mother Dugan's, Eric Timmons, Tom Russell and the Rockets of Desire, and Reggie Greenslaw.  The KHOI Community is certainly blessed with this fine group of musicians.  Peace on Earth and good will to all!

Christmas Around the World

People from Ames Communities took us to four countries on three continents to describe Christmas celebrations there. Sandra Unguec told us about South Sudan.  Karen Stein Corrales spoke nostalgically about Christmas in Nicaragua (and among immigrants in the US).  And Gina McAndrews described her Christmases in Australia and Oaxaca. We heard music from all as we shared celebrations around the world.

Local Talk for Friday, December 17, 2021 included a news summary of the week from the Ames Tribune by Dennis Hart.  Steve Veysey, member of the Cold Water Alliance provided an update of the Save Bloody Run campaign.  A 11,600 head cattle feedlot has been constructed in the watershed of this Outstanding Water designated trout stream.  Mr. Veysey included update of litigation against the proposed feedlot and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. More information can be learned at SaveBloodyRun.org. Susan Gwiasda with City of Ames included Jason Clausen, Public Works Supervisor, discussing the recent derecho force winds that impacted Ames this week.  According to Public Relations Officer, Gwiasda Ames residents incurred only two outages that were recovered within two hours and 45 minutes.  Ames residents were in good hands during this storm.  Also, think of ways to honor upcoming snow removal efforts and realize snowplow operators need our love and respect this time of year.  Michaela Van DerBerg with ISU Extension provided dates for many worthwhile, upcoming workshops and presentations in January. Black Iowa News, Independent Iowa Newspapers, Nevada Ben Franklin

Leanne Harter's monthly Story County Report consisted mainly of warnings about dangerous weather.  Dana James, publisher of Black Iowa News, described her online publication, available at blackiowanews.bulletin.com  Craig Schultz, editor of The Ogden Reporter told how independent papers cover the news in small Iowa towns.  Sheila Smith, Manager of Ben Franklin in Nevada described how this vintage store stayed open every day throughout the  Pandemic and is celebrating its 50th Christmas in Main Street Nevada.
