A round up of some of last week's news stories from Iowa in the national arena, provided by The Iowa Informer.

With KHOI environmental reporter Pat Schlarbaum, discussion about water issues and policies, particularly how confinement feed operations (CAFOs) affect environment and water in Iowa. Ralph Rosenberg, former Executive Director of the Iowa Environmental Council State Senator and Iowa Legislator, and Carolyn Raffensberger, executive director of the Science and Environmental HealthNetwork speak about bills currently before the Iowa legislature and their consequences, and alternative ways to approach agriculture and water quality. They speak o the issue in anticipation of  CAFOs/Water Quality Forum" in Ames City Auditorium, scheduled for Monday, December 18.

Aaron Oneal, KHOI's latest outgoing intern from the ISU Greenlee School of Journalism, describes his life and work at KHOI. He introduces the KHOI Youtube Channel that he has been developing, that features videos of concerts at KHOI, reporting trips of interest by the Local Talk reporters, and some "celebrity interviews" with KHOI radio hosts. 

Paul Nelson, KHOI's founding Chief Operator and Chief Engineer, talks about why he volunteered to put KHOI on the air, what it was like to build KHOI, and about the value of Community Radio and its culture.

 

News Roundup, Christmas Cats, Ames School District Magazine

The show started with the News Roundup with Dennis Hart. Reporter Kay Puttock brought us an interview with Ron Edwards, the Animal Control Supervisor for the City of Ames. They talked about keeping cats indoors, particularly during the winter holidays. We also heard a Christmas cat story from Paul Nelson.

Host, Gale Seiler, interviewed Eric Smidt, the Director of School, Community & Media Relations for the Ames Community School District, who highlighted the District’s new quarterly magazine.

After hearing Leanne Harter's monthly Story County Report, Pat Schlarbaum brought us a short tribute to Nature Photographer Roger Hill who died on November 28, 2017. We then heard a recording of Roger telling us about his encounter with foxes. Pat also brought us an interview with Kevin Techau, moderator of the upcoming  "CAFOs/Water Quality Forum" scheduled for Monday, December 18, 6:00 to 8:00 PM.  The last part of our program was a visit to Roland Story Middle School  where we spoke with students of the Builders Club Lucas Wuebker, Skylar Boggs, Wrigley Propp, Issie Bohl, and Colby Spainhower. Later they were followed by their faculty sponsor Michael Oleson telling us more details of  their project, Blessings for Blank, which is collecting Christmas gifts for children in the Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines. Paul Wierson joined us by phone to congratulate the students on their good work.

Following the weekly news roundup from the Iowa Informer, Sally LaPan and John Pleasants of the Ames Jewish Congregation  gave us explanation of Hannukah, which will start tomorrow, December 12.  Next came a visit to the the North Grand Indoor Mall. Organizers of the Christmas Market. Dick De Moss and Leatha De Moss described the importance of bees to the foods they grow before we interviewed vendors at a couple of the more colorful  booths.  Keith Morgan, Story County Emergency Management Coordinator, with Dr. Locke Karrier and Justin Brown, from the ISU Vet Medicine Department, described how they handled the accident when a hog trailer rolled onto its side while negotiating the I-35 to HWY 30 EB exit.

KHOI civic reporter Dennis Hart provides a roundup of this past week's local news, from the pages of Ames Tribune. 

Responses and thoughts from some ISU students in the Student Union Commons, to Time Magazine's choice of Person of the Year 2017: "Silence Breakers" on the topic of sexual assault and harassment. Young adults share what they think it means and how they have experienced the issue in their personal lives.

Kirsten Anderson speaks on the topic of sexual harassment in the workplace. Anderson made national news as a former Iowa Senate Republican Caucus staff member, who won a settlement from the state of Iowa for sexual harassment and wrongful termination. Anderson describes what happened to her, the legal actions she took, and the educational work she is now doing, to make work places better in Iowa.

Merry Rankin, Director of Sustainability for Ames and Iowa State University, and Ed Moran, Reiman Gardens staff person, discusses Reiman Gardens' operations in light of sustainability, and current exhibits there.

 

Ducharme-Jones and Holiday Comedies

This is a lighthearted show previewing three Holiday Comedies throughout the area and the upcoming Pantorium Sessions duo, Ducharme-Jones.  We started our show with Katie Schlake giving us a little background on the artists who'll play at the Pantorium on December 7.  Moving on to this weekend, we featured three theatre groups from three counties of our listening area.  Robby Peterson told us about the dinner theatre comedy, Don't Hug Me by Phil Olsen playing at History Boy Theatre in Jefferson, Greene County. From Lynn Arterburn gave us a glimpse of  A Christmas Chaos by Michael Wehrlei, which is playing at the Ankeny Community Theatre in Story County. And finaly the play, Story Theatre by Paul Sills, put on by the Boone Community Theatre.
