Erv Klaas, Vice President of Prairie Rivers of Iowa tells us about some of the organization's conservation and development projects. Susan Gwiasda, Public Relations Officer for the City of Ames , tells us what's coming up for the city in the next month. Civil engineer Rudy Koester updates us on construction projects around Ames.

Listening Back to Memorial Day, Forward to Art Walk

KHOI intern Isaac Biehl starts us off with a "listen" back to the Memorial Day ceremony at Municipal Cemetery, held by the Ames Patriotic Council. Herman Quirmbach, president of the Council, and Jathan Chicoine, ISU Veteran Services Coordinator, speak. The Ames Municipal Band plays.

Then KHOI intern Zachary Neuendorf gets us up to speed on Art Walk, happening this Friday, June 3, with an interview with Judy Gilger, co-owner of Gilger Designs, which is sponsoring the event, and Andrea Basche, manager of Worldly Goods and co-chair of the Art Walk committee.

Then, long-time Ames guitarist Larry "Red" Stoltenberg joins us in the studio for conversation and song. Redz Blues, a five-member band, will play the whole duration of Art Walk, 5:00 to 8:00 PM, at the KHOI digs here at 410 Douglas in Ames. You're invited to come down and listen, maybe even join the Doodle Squad, which will be painting a new mural for the station's walls.

This Memorial Day Program took in the full scope of the ways Memorial Day is celebrated, starting with Henry Corbin's meditation on the history and meaning of poppies as a symbol of remembrance, followed by a personal memory by Dennis Dake of his friend Rich Van Valin and the Senior Disc Golf League, and finally an interview with Pat Shaw, representing the State Association for the Preservation of Iowa Cemeteries talking about efforts to identify and protect pioneer cemeteries.

These were interviews they did as part of the Story County Stories project. The Ames Progressive Alliance returned for their monthly segment. Victoria Szopinski, Anne Kinzel, and Betty Baird, from the Alliance, interviewed Bob Haug, Don Kom and Mike Fisher about Ames Community Solar.

Ogden's 150th and Fun Days 2016

We visited Ogden for to preview the Sesquicentennial Celebration of its founding and the upcoming Ogden Fun Days 2016 Festival. Connie Rudy, author of the local history Downtown Ogden, Past and Present, gave an overview of the town's development.

Doug Nebbe described the career of his father, a popular band director of the 1930s and '40s, as well as providing insights into the history of Ogden's role in the Iowa coal industry.

Becky Blair, from the Ogden Reporter, told about the newspaper's role in gathering and publishing weekly stories about the people and events from Ogden's 150 years.

Dan Friedrichs gave an enthusiastic preview of the some of the events of the three day Ogden Fun Days celebration, including a drive-in movie on Thursday night, the giant car show on Friday, the parade on Saturday morning, and Bill Riley Talent Search on Saturday evening.
