Today's show started with a feature about KHOI's music host Roger Berger, who will be awarded Ames Community Arts Council 's Lifetime Achievement Award at the celebration next Sunday in the Octagon. Then we heard a historic perspective on boarding houses in Ames with Alex Fejfar from the Ames Historical Society. Merry Rankin, Director of Sustainability for Iowa State University and also Sustainability Coordinator for the City of Ames and her guests Megan Koppenhafer and Jordan Muell, representatives of the Green Umbrella organization on campus told us about the many events planned for Earth Month at ISU and the City of Ames.

Abby Huff, new director of the Story City Greater Chamber Connection, gave us a preview of what will be coming up in the next months as well as telling about the Main Street Program and its significance for historic preservation and promoting small towns. Todd Thorson, owner of the Story City Grand Opera House told us about the conversion to digital projection just completed.

The last part of our program was a road trip to visit Roland native and internationally-known Country music singer/songwriter DeLon Thompson in his home in Tucson, Arizona, to hear in song and story how he started his music career at age 54 in the 1990s.

Numerous voices recorded at the April 5 meeting of the Mason City city council provide citizen perspectives on the March 21 announcement that Mayor Eric Bookmeyer, the State of Iowa, and Prestage Foods had come to an agreement on a 10,000-kill pork processing plant on the south side of town that will cost the town $14 in tax abatements, $35 million in infrastructure upgrades, and likely much more in environmental and social costs.

Mary Ross of St. Cecilia Catholic church and Carol Hellend of Cornerstone Church describe local participation in Days for Girls, an international sewing project with the goal of providing every girl and young woman in the underdeveloped world a kit for feminine hygiene. St. Cecilia hosts a Days for Girls sewing party tomorrow (4/12) at 7:00 PM.

Vic Moss, director of Emergency Residence Project for 29 years, recently announced plans to retire within a few months. He talks about his life before the shelter, and retirement plans.

The two democratic candidates for Story County Supervisor, Reno Berg and Lauris Olson debate county issues in anticipation of the primary runoff on June 7, 2016. Early voting for this primary starts April 28th.

Olson and Berg are running on the Democratic side to fill the seat opening up in Story County, when County Supervisor Wayne Clinton retires in December, after serving for four-terms.

Local business co-owner Gary Simpson talks about what a part his firm, Technical Services Inc., is manufacturing for the new detection system of the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. ISU physics professor John Lajoie explains how the collider works to produce the kind of quark-gluon plasma phase that scientists believe was present in the first moments after the Big Bang.

Linda Murken, Ames resident and member of the Bakken Pipeline Resistance Coalition steering committee, describes how she followed the clues that led to her discovery of the construction of an electrical substation in south Story County, then followed the money back to Dakota Access and its planned pumping station. The pipeline company is not supposed to begin construction until certain conditions are met and may face fines for doing so.

Melissa Spencer, Story County Emergency Management deputy coordinator, and Samantha Lorenz, intern, share details about the family-friendly Spring Fury disaster preparedness event on April 30.
