KHOI DonnaLonna Kitchen Show Wins Award

The DonnaLonna Kitchen, a radio show on KHOI 89.1 FM in Ames, won international recognition for programming that promotes world-wide understanding of food, nutrition, and agriculture. It was awarded a place among 41 radio productions from around the world, to be featured by a project sponsored by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in cooperation with the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC). It is be one of two programs chosen to represent the United States.

The DonnaLonna Kitchen’s winning radio production is called “Carrot King and Jello”. It features an interview with Gary Guthrie, a farmer well known in Central Iowa for his tasty carrots. Guthrie’s farm, Growing Harmony Farm, is located south of Nevada, Iowa. The winning show also explores the wide world of jello.

New Year's Celebrations

This preview of the New Year's Celebrations of 2014, include an interview with Jessica Hansen of the Ames Jaycees telling about the New Year's Eve Bash at the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center with Burnin' Sensations. Then Shirley Shaw issued an invitation to the Red Friars' Dance Party where the High Society Big Band will be playing. Announcements of other Ames events were followed by an interview with Jim and Linda Sills at the Crossroads Tavern in Kelley, which will provide shuttle service for its party with Country & Western singer Casey Muessigmann. Our special guest was fifteen-year-old Hawk McIntyre, singer and guitar player from Boone, who came with his manager and father Jeremy McIntyre to tell about how he has launched his career in central Iowa and what he plans to do for the New Year's party at Toby K's Hideaway in Boone. For listeners in Marshall County, we announced The The Electric Hillbillies at Road Hog's Bar in State Center.

Story County Holidays

Today we feature three different holiday events in Story County towns. First was an interview with Daniel Christian who will be performing at the Story City Grand Opera House on Thursday, December 18 at 7:00 PM. The second event was the Senior Dinner put on for all the seniors in the Roland-Story City area by the students from Roland-Story Middle School in Roland. Paul and Susan shared their experience and Principal John Sheahan described how every student (5th through 8th grades) worked to serve a banquet and provide holiday entertainment for 200 guests. The third event was the Pancake Breakfast and visit from Santa at the Kelley Fire Department put on by the Volunteer Firefighters and First Responders. People describing the event included Ken Kling, Jodi Meridith, Paul and Merlene Whisenard and Santa.

Hannuka, Swans, Geese, SCCF

Environmentalist Pat Schlarbaum explains what is going on with all the wild geese and swans around the area. Apparently, a whole crew of migrating birds has arrived from the North to winter in Iowa.

Jennifer Garst, Executive Director of the Story County Community Foundation explains their Endowment Program, together with Board member Daryl Veggie and Liz Beck, from Heartland Senior Services, one organization that is using the endowment program.

Sally Lapan, John Pleasant. and Hannah and David Gradwohl relate the story and meaning of Hannuka, the history of the Ames Jewish Congregation, the creation of the Synagogue, and what it is like to be Jewish in Ames, especially during the holiday season.

KHOI's own DonnaLonna Kitchen show won international recognition in a contest held by the World Association of Community Broadcasters (AMARC) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Former Ames artist Jo Myers-Walker currently has an exhibition of paintings for sale of her trip to Rouen France at Wheatsfield Coop's Community Gallery. Jo describes her new life in Iowa City,

Cy City, a program sponsored by Leadership Ames, produced 30 life-sized, painted Cy statues to be displayed around Ames. Four of them were purchased by businesses of individuals, but one was purchased by YSS. George Belitsos, director of Youth and Shelter Services, tells this heart-warming story.

Tibi Chelcea from Ames C.art announces POP UP Ames, an un-juried, un-censored, free art exhibition. The show is one night only, December 19, 2014, at Design on Main, 205 Main Street, Ames. RVP 1875 Christmas

The County Reporters took a road trip to Jefferson to visit RVP 1875’s version of Santa’s Workshop, where they talked with master woodworker Robby Peterson in his workshop about the historic furniture he builds and teaches others to build. Then we toured the History Boy Theatre and talked about the dinner and a musical show, “Murder Ballad,” directed by Angie and Robby Peterson, which is making its Mid-west Premiere on New Year’s Eve. On the way back to Ames we discussed Christmas Tree Farms in several counties.
